John Lasseter's TERRIBLE Pixar Knock-Off...

From Pixar's biggest disgrace comes a Pixar knockoff movie. 'Luck' seems like a film with an interesting premise. What cooky things could happen if you only have bad luck? What an inventive and fun prompt to play off of! Instead, what we get is a undercooked world that does a lot of overexplaining for a system that's overcomplicated. Completely missing the mark on what people would come to a film like this for, to give us Pixar cliches, an anticlimactic story, and a muddied overall message. Dragging down the likes of John Ratzenburger and Simon Pegg, this is experience of John Lasseter's TERRIBLE Luck Movie...

What would YOU do with the premise of Luck? Cause your idea would probably work out better than this one...
  • The irony is that the “mobile art style” was heavily based in Pixar’s once-distinctive style, which made computer animated characters appealing to look at. But now that everyone is imitating it, it’s not that special anymore.
  • @Magic-np1ws
Literally all they had to write was "Without bad luck, good luck wouldn't be special."

I think this movie could be improved if they just made them sisters instead of friends. It would make Sam's desperation (bc let's be honest that what it looks like) for Hazel to be adopted make a lot more sense and it would add a kindof bittersweet moment at the end

The premise kinda reminds me of the show Milo Murphy’s law, where the Main character has to live with everything going wrong around him

…that’s not how automatic toilets work, though. As long as you’re covering the sensor, it won’t flush. It’s so weird that the writers apparently had to completely change how toilets work for the plot to happen.

"Oh my gosh, I am soooo unlucky guys" Lived in the orphanage system without any other issue, except not being adopted. Gets a nice paid for apartment and given a job. Even when she fails, she is kept employed. Her "bad-luck" is mild inconveniences that she (and anyone) could easily recover from. I get it's a kids movie, but it's not really inspiring as it's trying to portray. She has too good of a life, and many opportunities. Just made me feel annoyed the whole time. Like, "Oh your life is soooo terrible, oh what a shame for you. Your luck is just horrible isn't it?"

“Bob is such a nothing name, it’s like a placeholder”. Uh…isn’t your favourite movie The Incredibles?

I think immediately you can see a major problem in the animation department in the film's opening. I can think of several cartoonier ways for 'bad luck' to occur in a craft store, but the movie's portrayal is weirdly clean and restrained. Especially with the cactuses. It's like the film's afraid to be silly.

That jam spread on the bread is the most beautiful I've seen animated... they're out here making breakthroughs in animation technology for the most mediocre movies

I think my biggest gripe with this movie has always been how bland the main character’s design is. There are some really fun and unique designs in this movie, like Jeff the unicorn for example, but they seemed so afraid to make Sam look bad that they instead made her forgettable. You would think for a character who ONLY has bad luck she would have a few scrapes here and there that a bandage could cover up or some rips in her clothes, if not going all in with a wild “bad” haircut or something… idk it’s just a major missed opportunity to not add any story elements to her design :/
  • @sparks-of-magic
They could have so easily made the bad luck thing work by having Hazel's family have some huge bad luck event that caused them to be cancelling the appointments + let them bond with hazel over some bad event
  • The irony of this being made (Well produced but still) by John Lasseter who made GREAT films for Pixar is baffling.
  • @Kawamagi
i quite like the animation on the cat though, looks really nice, especially when he sniffs at the panini and his nose scrunches up. very life-like

11:38 Im irish these fuckers ARENT luck based at all. In fact they are shoe makers for elves
  • @TravistheDragon
Apparently this movie’s original concept was about this war between good luck and bad luck that has been affecting the world for centuries. But John Lasseter apparently made them change the story for some reason. I only know what I heard but the former definitely sounds like a good concept to me.

The studio I interned at during my last college year (Illion animation) was one of the teams that was working on this film. When we were working there the story was very different, it actually had a Spy vs Spy mixed with Despicable Me vibe. My internship only lasted a few months, but from what I saw, I was surprised on how little of if actually ended up in the movie.
  • Since he was in this movie I feel it’s relevant. John Ratzenburger needs to be in Pixar movies again…
  • @Twiddle_things
This movie was so all over the place. Just watching this review hurt my neck from how it kept getting snapped back and forth. Luck, orphanages, retail, dimensions, cats, leprechauns, coins, wtf?
