Making a Birch Bark Basket

I show the process of building a birch bark container with a lid. Working with birch bark is a traditional skill that is still practiced today. Personally I've seen many beautiful baskets made by Atikamekw(first nations) artists in Québec. Amongst other uses, birch bark can be used to build containers, shelters, and canoes. I have become very passionate about working with bark and love to learn as I go and I always try to improve my knowledge and skills.

Thanks for showing how you work. I’ve made a lot of birchbark baskets, but your shape at the beginning is the hardest to perfect, I find. Having a perfectly square base is so lovely.
