Join us to learn about the restoration of the Stanislaus River Watershed and give your input on the benefits to native plants!
Our speaker: Kevin Wolf, President, Restoring the Stanislaus River ([email protected]).
This will be a highly interactive session as Kevin is seeking information on which native plants would be benefit from restoration of upper watershed meadows, riparian zone and from cultural burning of forests. He will also review changes that are need to improve fisheries in the river below the dams and the impacts those changes would have on native species.
First Kevin will give an overview of the Stanislaus River Watershed, then he will drill down into 2-4 different restoration areas and ask for your input on what impacts this work would have on native plants.
The 4 restoration areas he can cover are: High and medium elevation meadow restoration, the introduction of beavers and other restoration projects Cultural fire practices that open the forest canopy and support more diverse species and distribution of trees. Lower river flood releases for instream vegetation management Conjunctive use with 10,000 acres of land in the Stockton East Water District being turned into an groundwater recharge zone As a group we will prioritize the areas since depending on your participation (which we want!) Kevin may or may not be able to cover them all.
Kevin says: “Each of these benefits different native species. Rather than us trying to be experts on the species that would benefit, which we aren’t, we could review each action, show some maps and examples, and then open it up for discussion among the participants on what they think the impacts would be on both native and invasive species.”
