From the 1800’s until the 1990’s the Canadian Government funded and ran a number of residential schools. From the outset, the goal was to educate the children of the indigenous people in ways deemed more “civilized” and assimilate them into western culture. In doing so, thousands of children were ripped from their homes and subjected to untold horrors. It is only recently that the survivors have been able to tell their harrowing stories.
