This is Dunny, you have seen him in other shoeing videos, this one is extended a little as I show how my kit packs away into my truck.

PLEASE READ THE FAQ's BEFORE POSTING!!
1: Burning the shoe onto the foot ensures a good fit.
2: No, it doesn't hurt the horse if it's shod correctly by a qualified registered person.
3: The horse is calm because it has been trained from birth to know there is nothing to fear.
4: The majority of horses these days are worked either under saddle or in harness and on hard man made surfaces, shoes protect the feet from wearing down too much and can add grip via studs in the shoes for competition animals.
5: Wild horses are extinct. Feral horses have particularly hard feet and manage them naturally by foraging.
6: The average horse needs re-shoeing every 6-8 weeks
7: The bit I am nailing to has no nerves and is made of Keratin, the same as your fingernails and hair.

I don't even own or take care of any horses but these horse shoeing and de shoeing vids sure are satisfying
  • You're damn good at this Gary and I like your portable anvil and the way you use the pritchel hole for knocking out nails . My great uncle was maybe the best farrier I ever saw and I'll never forget what he told me 55 years ago -> "When a horse starts going to sleep on ya ... you know your doin it right " . Thanks for your awesome video from a guy with the biggest mule you've ever seen .

SO zen! Every move has purpose...no wasted motion. What a craftsman!
  • @asvarien
He's a great horse, very cooperative with the farrier.
  • Dunny's a very cooperative horse. He deserves a better name than a synonym for an outhouse! Some horses are so unwilling to have their feet handled, the farrier puts a twitch in them -- which, naturally, only makes them head-shy. Dunny has clearly been handled often, well, and kindly.
  • I honestly have so much respect for you and all ferriers, you guys are bent over backwards almost everyday dling the same things 24/7. I honestly think you should win a reward or somthing
