All About Wisteria: Growing, Cautions, Summer Pruning this Beautiful Behemoth

Published 2022-07-09
Wisteria (W. sinensis and W. floribunda) is an iconic garden vine. Many a Victorian front porch or brick garden wall are swathed in its large fragrant drapey blossoms each spring.

But Wisteria is a BEAST of a plant, and it takes careful strategy and maintenance to keep this long-lived beauty in your garden without it becoming a nuisance. Let me walk you through what you should know before you put in a wisteria vine, and how we care for and prune ours.

Is it weird that the intimidating nature of this plant makes me want to have one more? Also, Ruth looks like Claire Danes! So lovely!

I have wanted a wisteria for years! Even after watching this I still really want one. However, I will no longer be planting it near my house so thank you!

I lived in an old tall narrow Victorian house in the Alphabet district back in the 80s. It had a Wisteria that had grown up the north side and over the roof. I loved it, but it was the possum super highway.

I just purchased my first wisteria. And I was searching for how to take care of it. After reading how evasive it is, Iwas about to return it! But after watching your video, I felt so confident about keeping my wisteria. Thanks so much for the video. You gave all the advice I need to own a wisteria.
  • Well, that's that. Cleared myself from wanting that plant lolol. I'm all set. Thank you!!!!!!

I hope you will share how you prune your wisteria for the winter. What an eye opener this video has been for me! I had no idea they were so work intensive. I've wanted one for years but hadn't gotten to it. I might not now...... Thank you!
  • I love the color combination of the wisteria and house. Absolutely beautiful!

Oh my gosh— this is the first video of PP that I have watched and not immediately added the featured plant to my “plants I yearn for” list! What a blessing! Have a great day!
  • I have a lot Wisterias and I train mine as trees up bird feeding poles and metal rods in containers and for me they are easy to handle.

I moved to a 3acre property in the country a year ago and woke up a couple days ago to tons of purple flowers everywhere. Didn't even know what it was. I saw only a small handful of them off in the distance last year. Googled "purple flowers" then came to YouTube for some more info. Thankfully it's far away from the house but I can tell it's smothering other plants/trees. What a chore this is gonna be. It's def taking over!! Very pretty to see but def taking over.🙂 Thank you for this informative video. I truly had no idea what this plant was. I'm glad I looked it up because I would have just left it alone - by next year it would have been the only thing left on my property! lol!
