LIVE: Press conference for first U.S. moon landing in over 50 years

Published 2024-02-23
The moon’s newest arrival was said to be “alive and well” a day after making the first U.S. landing in half a century, but flight controllers were still trying to get a better handle on its bearings.

Intuitive Machines reported Friday that it’s communicating with its lander, Odysseus, and sending commands to acquire science data. But it noted: “We continue to learn more about the vehicle’s specific information” regarding location, overall health and positioning. #moonlanding #intuitivemachines #odysseus #moon

Don’t tell me they’ll go for something like Boeing’s MCAS for correcting lateral motion.

Imagine not having "disable laser safety" on your checklist. Wow.

I thought it would be nice if we uprighted the Japanese moon lander while we were there, but nevermind.😮

I'd suspected that it had tipped over and this now confirms that. Interesting the both this lander and the recent lander from Japan both wound up on its side. I hope they can recover to be able to deploy most of the instruments.

The Comms system seems to have not been thought through.Big improvements needed. The DSN expertise and facilities should be used.

What a great accomplishment. Billions of dollars to crash on the moon. WOW.

Calling this a successful landing seems a bit of a stretch to me.... it's kinda like parking your car upside down and saying it's fine.

Not to throw water on this party, but are you telling me that there was no contingency plan for this failure in advance? No one foresaw this as a possible failure mode… especially since there was no planned redundancy?

AND THE CHEAPEST ? Was this the most inexpensive landing in history or just from the "U.S." direct efforts.
