Itā€™s no secret that Rick and Morty had an uphill battle this year. From a general waning interest in the show as a whole, to the fact that co-creator Justin Roiland was replaced by newcomers as the voices of BOTH Rick and Morty, the series had a LOT of work to do to prove itself. But somehow, against all odds, Rick and Morty just quietly had one of its best seasons in years. And has seemingly won over a lot of goodwill in the process, despite plenty of fans still being angry about the recast. Even I was planning to reel in my coverage of season 7 a bit, but after this latest season finale, thereā€™s no way I couldnā€™t talk about the season as a whole. This year we got really fun one offs, one of the best major lore bomb episodes the show has ever done AND an incredible character-driven season finale, possibly my favorite season finale in the series. So Iā€™m gonna go ahead and breakdown a few season highlights and go over that spectacular season finale.

The ending was a ā€œShutter Islandā€ kind of twist when Ricks mouth open and told Morty Thank you for visiting. I was on the floor shocked. Easily best finale for me.

People aren't talking about how big it is that Rick keeps a picture of Morty with him at all times. He usually wouldn't do anything that doesn't have intrinsic value or a larger purpose, so him doing that just for himself perfectly captures how he feels about his grandson. Sad things is that current Rick would never admit it.

"YOU ARE'NT EVEN IN THE HOLE ARE YOU?!?" Gut renching.
  • The line where Rick explains that he didn't jump in because the hole can't examine two fears at the same in case they cancel each other out felt significant. It's very possible that Rick's greatest fear is Morty no longer needing him (compounded by his loss of Diane) and in that, Morty would learn he isn't replaceable and Rick would learn that Morty would never leave him, cancelling out both fears.

The finale was something so unexpected, so mind boggling to me. Itā€™s not something ā€œcanonā€-based as they do in previous seasons, itā€™s an introspective deep dive into Mortyā€™s ethos and the way he ticks. I was so shocked at the plot twist in the final minutes of the episode, and it sent my stomach into a pit feeling. The Holeā€™s speech about love and Rick had been captivated so much I watched it again at the end of the episode. This has shaped up to be my favorite episode of Rick and Morty. And the Mr. Poopy Butthole scene at the end was hilarious.

The thing that really gets me about this finale is just how emotional the scenes between Rick and Dianne are. You really feel the weight of that decision Rick has to make for Morty. But then it all ends up just being inside of Morty's head. So as emotional as the Rick and Dianne stuff is, it's all from Morty's knowledge of Rick himself. When you actually break that fact down, Morty's empathy for his grandpa is on another level, and for as much crap as he does give Rick now, it shows that all Morty really wants is for Rick to find real happiness.

Hey, Johnny! I was part of the S7 crew, and just wanted to say: 1. Like I've been telling my partner all year (not wanting to spoil) - ep 5 is what fans want, but ep 10 is what they need :) 2. We were served churros at the Christmas party and I find it hilarious. Thank you for your videos, as always!

The one thing I greatly loved about this season is the clear "rick is trying" motif, he is going to therapy, he is setting boundary, he is trying to respect the family more and most of all, he is trying to do more "yes-and" with Morty without an over reliance on his snarky behavior. I honestly think the pet cemetery bit was a great example of this, where originally he tries to make Morty shut up, but then he was more receptive to the core idea Morty gave him. Seeing him grow and feel more real rather than an impossible person makes the show better. He doesn't have to solve all his emotional problems at once, he could even fall back, but this is a nice change of pace.
  • I loved the fact that they brought back so many characters. They executed all of them perfectly. It was a very entertaining season

That "Dear God" at the end by Morty was so thrilling. I really don't care about there being a change in voice actors because they are still so good.

I really enjoy how Rick is finally back to being not a god anymore. Like in seasons 3, 4, 5, and maybe 6 heā€™s treated as an untouchable god with like insta kill shields and an entire body of mechanisms, while season 1 and 2 have just be kinda smart and have like 2 gadgets in his pocket every mission. Itā€™s nice to see him getting his ass kicked or make mistakes and not entirely dominating or being able to easily defeat every enemy that comes his way
  • Morty comfronting his fear was a great experience and i hope a window for more character growth for him next season

the new voice actors for BOTH Rick and Morty really gave it there all and there spot on to the point where I can't tell the difference anymore and I hardy miss Roiland

I wish rick and morty would do more episodes based on these sci-fi, psychological or moral concepts. It's episodes like this which makes rick and morty one of my favorite series.
  • @EternalStorm796
I'm just glad this episode sorta gave more insight into Diane's personality.
  • tbh i actually think this season is one of the best of the series. it balances the off beat humor and serious character driven sci fi storylines that make me love the series extra well this season.
  • @andreaswong8829
Heather Anne Campbell just straight up wrote the two best episodes this season, massife props to her
  • @ame-senpai4421
somehow it warms my heart to know that no matter how much of an a hole rick is, heā€™s got a photo of morty in his wallet like all grandparents do šŸ˜
  • @MRdaBakkle
The best part was the fear hole guy telling Morty that he could leave whenever he wanted. Telling Morty exactly what he needed to do to overcome his fear.
