Ivey Farms Harvesting Orchard Grass For Hay

Published 2018-12-31
Here, in case you might not know, are the remaining steps after the “grass”—in this case Orchard Grass—is mowed: First it’s tossed to prepare for the rake, then packaged into hay bales andthen put up in the barn.

Ivey Farms produces high-quality Orchard Grass (Dactylis glomerata) for their own cattle operation and also for sale to the public.

Orchard Grass is a strongly tufted, deep-rooted, long-lived perennial broad with distinctive tufted triangular flowerheads and resides in the genus of Eurasian and North African plants and falls in the bluegrass subfamily within the grass family.

Dactylis glomerata is widely used as a hay grass (and for pastures) primarily because of its higher yields and excellent sugar content that makes it sweeter than most of the other temperate grasses.

It is considered a high quality hay and is suitable for most types of livestock.

Also known as cock's-foot or cat grass. “Cat Grass”—interestingly enough—because in addition to producing an excellent livestock hay, it’s grown widely to satisfy the craving of domestic cats to chew grass.
