AGAINST é um álbum inovador, com letras bem escritas, bem tocado, furioso, "barulhento", bem feito, representa o recomeço do zero. E lá se vão quase 20 anos, parece que foi ontem.
  • This album is insanely great. The mix of sounds of several cultures is just awesome! and the voices just Brutal, like real tribes of the Amazonas claiming the revenge of their ancestors´ death. You can really fell the spirits of indigenous people shouting echoes of sorrow and anger........................just phenomenal

This album got so much flack when it came out because Max wasn't on it, and even back then I really didn't understand the problem people had with the songs. Seriously, the opening track "Against" is probably my F A V O R I T E Sepultura opening track of all times, even harkening back to MORBID VISIONS, and even BENEATH THE REMAINS. It has all the ingredients and sounds of what makes a great Sepultura, including this "non-Western" pulse and vibe, but it's short and full of punky 80s trash hardcore energy, and Derreck's voice completely blows everything out of the water. It's direct and ruthless yet oddly groovy. It's a statement song. As if that wasn't enough they follow it up with "Choke", which basically has all the qualities of the opening track but is more sludgy, slightly slower and complex with more "non-Western" and ethnic signatures and sections in it. Then the bridge song, "Rumors", continues the sludge and "non-Western" rhythmic introduced in "Choke", yet it delves deeper into the slower registers while gorging in signature Sepultura guitar sounds. Derrick also goes more into this speech-like raw voice type of singing that Max used a lot on CHAOS A.D., all this compiled with these march-like parts delivered by Igor. Excellent stuff. What I like about AGAINST is that it's almost like a conceptual album sound-wise as "Old Earth" basically is the spiritual successor of the previous track - it takes all the character of "Rumors" and turns it into a cinematic, almost epic, piece that just oozes of everything that is great about Chaos A.D. "Old Earth" brands out to "Floaters in Mud", which is a very uneven song to me - the first part is kind of a mixed bag with great ingredients that unfortunately don't match that well, and Derrick's voice starts sounding monotone despite the alteration between singing styles. However, once half the song has passed and the song enters this odd ethnic, almost positive sounding passage, "Floaters in Mud" transforms into this almost hypnotic creation that is ultra heavy - aggressive Japanese drums and echoing guitars. Now, we're almost at the midway mark of AGAINST, which is positioned by "Boycott". "Boycott" is a true Sepultura hit song in the vein of "Territory", "Roots Bloody Roots" etc. The following song, "Tribus", builds around Japanese drums and Igor's drumming and some excellent guitar play that emphasizes the non-Western vibe and signature of the song in the way only Sepultura can do it. It's an instrumental piece that serves as a reintroduction of the sound previous to "Boycott" / more sludgy, cinematic and dirty, yet with guitars that sound very ARISE to me. Now, the next song, "F.O.E.", is another instrumental that is centered around Igor's drumming and pretty much sounds like i could have, and should have, been a part of the previous song. It's around this point that AGAINST starts to get a little uneven. The song "Reza" is a great trash-death metal hybrid completely submerged in Brazilian metal glory. Joao Gordo sings on this track, and his voice has a lot of the qualities of Max Cavalera of old, which makes this song feel like an odd ROOTS and ARISE hybrid with some MORBID VISIONS in it. But instead of continuing the style of "Reza", the next song - "Unconscious ", goes back to where "Floaters in Mud" left off. It's not a bad song at all, and it encapsulates the previous songs on the album, and Derrick shines, but it makes the previous track ("Reza") sound completely out of place. Now, despite the dislodging moment between "Reza" and "Unconscious", we get one of the heaviest, most epic, thundering and instrumental slow-moving metal masterpieces ever - "Kamaitachi". It's a track centered around Japanese drumming and flute (Kodo Village) with Sepultura providing atmosphere and distortion to the track. It's like a big creaking ark plowing it's way through a doomsday typhoon tsunami. Very epic. But instead of following up the almost mythological and ancient battle feel of "Kamaitachi", we get two fast trash metal songs - "Drowned Out" and "Hatred Aside", the latter guested by Jason Newstead. Both songs are good by all means and fore some reason reminds me of Motorhead and early Metallica. However, "Hatred Aside" flawlessly steers the record back to the "non-Western", sludgy Sepultura sound, with all the epic and cinematic qualities that this album has offered so far. By the point the song ends it's impossible to imagine that it started as a fast trash song inspired by Motorhead and early Metallica. AGAINST ends with "Tr3cermillenium" which is a beautiful mostly acoustic song with guitar, some kind of violin and various kinds of percussion, which makes it a beautiful and humble song in the same vein as "Kaiowaz", yet it has the same creaky wooden Japanese rumbling thunder feel as one of the previous tracks on this album, "Kamaitachi". All in all, AGAINST displays some great song-writing and flawless soundscapes plus some amazing and rich instrumentality, both metal and "ethnic". My only criticism of AGAINST is the almost shuffled feel once the track "Reza" hits. It breaks the immersion and flow. I personally feel like they could have relegated "Reza" to become one of the bonus tracks, and although "Drowned Out" is a great trash song, they could've saved it for a later occasion. To me this is probably my favorite Sepultura album as it grows on me every time I listen to it - it's on shared first place with BENEATH THE REMAINS to me.

... legendary long-lasting SEPULTURA 🇧🇷 from Brazil, Thrash-Metal institution - here for the first time feat. US guy Derrick Green aka Derrick Leon Green on vocs who at the same time has been the fully established vocalist since then (1998) ... 🤘 🇧🇷
SEPULTURA PRA SEMPRE!!! 🤘😈🍺
  • @FizzSix
Perhaps the least appreciated Sepultura album, and in my opinion, one of their absolute best. The fuse elements of hardcore-tribal much more on this album than the newer stuff. This is my probably my 3rd favorite Sepultura album.

With this one and the Soulfly debut we have two really crazy Roots successors. I love them both.
