In this episode Zeinab Badawi travels to Angola, DRC and Congo in central Africa to bring the history of the great Kongo Empire. She hears about the critical role played by women in African history such as Queen Nzinga who battled the Portuguese for a quarter of a century in the 1600s and a few decades later Kimpa Vita who was burned alive after her failed resistance. Why were Africans unable to resist the tide of European control? One woman of nearly 100 relates her memory of Belgian rule in the Congo, during what became known as the 'Scramble for Africa’.

My mother told me that my great great grandmother who is my grandfather grandmother was born in Kongo but end up in chains in Jamaica. I was born and rise here in Canada and when the media mention anything about Africa is always negative but when I read the great Kongo civilization when I was 16 years old I feel so proud of being Black.

Love from Brazil here. 🇧🇷 So amazing to learn the history of my ancestors, from great civilizations to resistance and the fight for freedom from European greed and destruction. Everyone of African descent should have access to this and be empowered by the knowledge, and we should use this to stay united and build a better future for us and our children.

I was a Student in England when Zeinab Badawi was a young Reporter. She was faced with Predujiduce ad well. I am so pleased that she is now educating us about our Rich Black African Heritage. One can see how long the Aliens were trying to Conquer us. Thank you God we are still here, thanks to our Foreparents. Thank you Zeinab. The cruel treatments hurt, but we have to carry on. My Fellow Black Africans don't be bitter, we are here to continue where our Foreparents left off. Be safe from everyone and everything. God the Creator Reigns. Peace.
  • Till date there is no retribution for the level of savagery committed against Africa.

  • Such an insightful documentary!!! How did I not know about The Great African queen's who led armies of men in fighting off slavery and colonisation!!!. Our curriculum needs a review! I have taken up to research on this and more!

Hands-down, this is the best documentary on imperialism in Africa that I’ve seen. Not only is it informative, but it reinforces resistance to imperialism and notes powerful leaders by name who fought against the European imperial powers. I had no idea there were queens who resisted so effectively, and I hope this side of history gets taught more in schools.

  • Leopard was worse than Hitler, the Belgiums need to repay the people of Congo for this evil atrocities
  • They avoid teaching us this type of history in both Western and African schools
  • Very educative. This is what African need to know rather than learning about European history. Great work BBC and the reporter
