Housing in Peril: The CRASH of the GREAT AUSTRALIAN DREAM of Homeownership

The Great Australian dream of owning a home is slipping away for many, becoming more like a far-off dream. Gloomy headlines predict it's only getting worse, saying lots of people are having a tough time buying a home – and it's going to get even harder.

This dream, once a symbol of stability and success, now seems out of reach for more and more folks.

Economic changes, rising house prices, and growing financial pressures are making it tough to save up for a house. Every day, it feels like owning a home is getting further away, leaving many feeling unsure about their future.

With the housing market going through ups and downs, the dream of owning a home in Australia is stuck in a cycle of broken promises and bigger challenges, making people wonder if it'll ever come true again.

This is what happened when successive government's main preoccupation is winning the next election instead of planning for the future of the country. We need better pollies.

in Canada they did this as well it's almost like a coordinated torpedoeing of every single western country

Letting so many people come here from other countries has destroyed the great Australian dream of owning your own home. There’s too many people and not enough houses to put everyone. Our government has betrayed us!
  • @WalterSamuels
Australia is truly lost. Too many lazy politicians with way too much money and power, wasting our tax dollars on garbage. If this country is to survive, our money needs to be spent effectively, and we need an overhaul of our government.

Im 34 years old. Did all the right things as a youngsters. Got an apprenticeship after finishing school. Completed it and have continued to work in my trade. Worked my way up the ranks. Still cant afford to purchase a house. And have accepted that i never will. My generation and future generations are suffering.
  • @morganoox3838
680,000 new people this year. About 7000 people per new house. Im sure that and foreign investors buying million dollar houses for cash had nothing to do with it.

Millennial Aussie here. I was only able to buy a home for 3 reasons - 1) I worked overseas for a few years and didn't get taxed to death; 2) I saved liked crazy and worked my backside off, and still do; 3) I am lucky enough to have family who could help a little bit. I bought my property off an asian investor that had bought 6 properties in Melbourne, apparently for cash. How can we expect our government to address this issue if they live off the ridiculous stamp duties and land taxes generated in the process?

This country is being destroyed by uncontrollable property greed. My advice for the young - get remote work, move to Asia, rent / or buy an 80k~ AUD condo, and live a good happy life where you can afford to raise many children. Watch from afar as Australia implodes, knowing that you got off that ship in time.

About 2 years ago some friends of ours started talking about moving overseas and we were shocked. Then we started hearing about a few others looking to move away too. It's almost inconceivable that people are doing this.

Why are Non-Citizen Australian allowed to buy our housing when normally Australians then have to rent housing from those Non-Citizens but if we went to their Countries Australians can’t buy land because we aren’t Citizens of that country see the problem Oh I forgot Real Estate insdustry make more more if prices are high
  • Why does Australia have permanent skills shortages despite skills based immigration running for decades? Countries like the U.S. do not have this problem
  • @jedics1
I have many friends who worked their whole life and their reward will be to rent for life and won't be able to afford to retire because of stupid high rent, what will they do when their boss decides they are to old and hire someone younger?.....Our government sold Australia out from under us to the highest bidders.

I agree, the property crisis is only going to get worse until there is civil unrest between the have's and the have nots, and crime will escalate as it already is. Untimately its greed at every level of society that is responsible for this appaling state of affairs, and that includes mortgage brokerage industry, banks, governments past and present, and realestate industry.
  • @Michaely183
People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The increments dont match our income, yet certain investors still earn over $365,000 in stocks and assets. Wish I could accomplish that.
  • @ctrain12345
Negative gearing is going to be smashed. Tax for holding more than 1 property. Government loves tax to waste.
  • @zappy7393
Finally, someone who speaks to the inability to want to change rather then just the Government. I would argue that NG rather then the suburban sprawl impacts this housing crisis far more, especially because the suburbs have been here for decades. I was able to purchase my home (60yo QLDer) just before COVID and the subsequent boom. To my surprise, I found out that 2 out of 3 of my neighbours in the area owned 3+ houses between them! They both used these investment properties to NG and their retirement. Its no wonder everytime we talk about ridding NG, the voters come out against it for their own personal gain.
  • @OhBenWhyKenobi
Imagine if the governement limits the amount of rental units/houses a person/investors can own. I mean you can't buy more toilet papers when the hoarding started why can't it be applied with the houses?
  • If politicians don’t fix the housing crises and change policy then rates need to go to 10% plus for it to work and property will flood the market from too many property investors offloading. Make negative gearing for new property capped to one. Abolish negative gearing for used property. Ban foreign investment on residential
  • @nswpublicservant
SMSF's being allowed to invest in property have priced people out of the market. Force SMSF's to sell their properties and not allow it. When over 10% of Australia owns investment properties and 1% own 50% of Australia, you are bound to hit the point of no return.
