Honestly somehow didn't make the connection between Soul and Turning Red. All I've been thinking is how this would affect Mei's "Inside Out" emotions. Would her emotions also switch between their regular forms and a 'Red Panda' form whenever either of them have to use the panel?

So they removed one of their souls, and placed it inside an inanimate object. Would that technically make the object they placed it in... a Horcrux? If someone with only one soul tried to perform this ritual, it obviously wouldn't work. But what if they murdered someone, and then performed the ritual? Would it work then?

See I would go more to say that the ladies in Mei's family don't have two souls, but are born with one soul split into two. With the second half awakening when the ladies come of age. Because by the end of Turning Red Mei realizes she doesn't want to get rid of the panda spirit because it IS apart of her. And clearly the aunts and everyone else aren't getting RID of their pandas, but just containing them, since they were able to get those forms back again to save Mei's mother.

In regards to the Jerry's helping vs. Not helping, we already know that our population grew over time, so Astral interference probably just died down over time as a sheer numbers game. "Well we can't break the rules to help here bc there's so many people who are in need of help" is what i imagine the mindset is so it was probably much more common when there was literally less people who needed help 🥰🥰🥰

A slight twist on this theory: twin souls in the body, rather than gifting it at a later date? It could be that Sun Yee, asked for the gift to turn into the red panda, and the Jerry’s gifted her that second soul, but over time, as it was gifted to all female descendants, they were born with Twin souls (this would account for the count being off centuries before, but not any more). And the ceremony to remove the red panda spirit could be the severing of the tie between the two spirits, as a surgery to separate conjoined twins.

If toys can have souls, I think that buzz has two souls. One for English and one for Spanish mode. When buzz goes into Spanish mode, he is a completely different person. Having two souls could explain this phenomenon.

Does that mean that the place Mei goes is her culture’s version of the afterlife in Coco and her ancestors are there because they are remembered remembered.

I assumed the red panda was a spirit that lived inside her body and gave her the red panda transformation and not a second soul. ETA: Alebrije‘s are spirits living in the spirit world that aren’t souls. They also have the ability to inhabit a living creature. Dante the Xolo dog is a good example in my opinion!
