A retrospective of southern-California based metal band Leatherwolf, formed in 1981. Known for featuring three lead guitarists, unusual for an American metal band at the time, Leatherwolf had all the ingredients for success. However, record labels and odd marketing decisions would get in the way. And with a sound somewhere between thrash and glam, Leatherwolf was caught in the middle. Join me as we review the albums, videos, and history of a tremendous band that is too often overlooked.

Leatherwolf's second and third albums are melodic metal at its finest. I saw them play at the now defunct L'Amour in Brooklyn, NY. They had a great live sound and were excellent.
  • Leathewolf's first three albums are PHENOMENAL albums. I still listen to them very often. I even got their first live album Wide Open Live back in the late 90's , and love it big time as well. The guitar playing in this band is insanely amazing. I need to check out everything that has come out after. I will never understand how their song Hideaway did not become a huge massive hit. It is the song that got me into Leatherwolf when I first saw the video on MTV's Headbanger's Ball back in the day.

Awesome band! The riff in "The Calling" Must be on of the heaviest riff ever!

I saw Leatherwolf in a small club in Thornton Colorado in 89 with about 30 people there. Was one the best concerts I have ever attended. Leatherwolf (2) and Street Ready are 2 of the best albums to come from the 80's.

Its bands like this, metal church, death angel, vengence rising that made the 80s such a fucking great decade i feel blessed to have grown up with this music as a soundtrack to my life growing up
  • My first time hearing them. As an old school metalhead who grew up in the 80's i still get surprised discovering old bands that i somehow missed
  • Been a huge fan since 1985! These guys have it all! 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
  • Wow they were doing the triple axe attack way before Iron Maiden.

Loved these obscure less known being given the coverage

Hearing stuff like this catapults me right back to my middle school/high school days. Such a pure gritty all-American vibe, like Shok Paris or Fifth Angel to name but two.
  • All 3 albums are sublime pieces of auditory art. Every single aspect of their body of work in the 80s is executed to pure perfection. Their music simultaneously soothes my soul and breaks my heart far beyond what words could express.
  • Awesome band. Leatherwolf definitely ride the line between Power metal and commercial metal.
  • I had Street Ready on cassette when it came out in 89 it has been my favorite.

I lived in OC, CA during the late 90s, and Leatherwolf were local legends. I had a friend who knew those guys, and had all their CDs, which I borrowed and dubbed on cassette, because they were impossible to track down at the time.

Metal heads in South Texas were in touch with Leatherwolf from the beginning! Great episode and thanks for choosing this talented and creative but overlooked band.

Heard of the band, but never listened to em. Ordered the CD for Street. They certainly have a convoluted member history that you’ve chronicled, nice job!
  • I saw them open for Stryper on 12-13-85 at the Universal Amphitheater in LA. Awesome show.

Yeah, buddy! Great and under appreciated band. I wore my cassette of Island Records self titled Leatherwolf out. Street Ready stayed in my Walkman for about six months straight. Nice job covering the band’s history!
