Coming up, a great underdog story of a rookie artist who went through hell to get to the top. Cyndi Lauper beat the odds to hit #1 in 1984 with Time After Time… First of all, she lost her voice due to a collapsed vocal chord and didn’t know if she’d ever sing again. She also got sued for $80k and had to declare bankruptcy leaving her penniless. But Nothing could break Lauper’s spirit or grit. When she finally got her break, her label, Portrait Records was trying to push her to only cover songs even though she was a prolific writer. She rebelled and wrote a song with another up-and-coming artist named Rob Hyman that was partly inspired by the TV Guide as well as an alarm clock that wouldn’t die. She even threw it into the shower and closed the door but the loud ticking kept her awake. Luckily, it did become a #1 smash called Time After Time that ruled the charts and went on to become the most covered song of the 80s. It was so good when they were recording it, the producer wouldn’t let anyone near the studio in fear that someone would steal the song. UP next, an interview with the cowriter and co-singer Rob Hyman of the Hooters on the story of an absolute 80s standards. Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper from her best-selling album She’s So Unusual!

So it’s time for another edition of our series Revelations where artists take us for a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums. Today we get an in-depth look into one of the greatest standards of the 80s. It hit #1 in 1984 and has amassed more cover versions than any other song from the decade. And we have an interview with the co-writer and co-singer. I’m talking about the ultra-hypnotic and bittersweet masterpiece, Time After Time, by Cyndi Lauper.

Cyndia faced insurmountable odds when she was trying to make it. She was fired from her first band. then she started a band of her own called Flyer. During this time Cyndi could only afford cheap PA systems so she could never hear herself sing. So, she opted to just sing louder. Without any voice training her voice became hoarse after every show. She’d start with a full vocal range and completely use it up by the night’s end. This pattern led to Cyndi losing her voice for good, or so she thought at the time. She said, “I was devastated, and so scared because I had to stop singing for two months. I couldn’t talk—I had to write everything down

In the meantime, Flyer moved on and hired another vocalist. but Cyndi wouldn’t give up..as she visited with doctors, she learned that one of her vocal cords had collapsed. And she was told that singing rock and roll would be impossible. So, she got a second opinion. And a third. The consensus was that she had..

Cindi’s music means the world to me. My daughter,Meredith, was diagnosed with leukemia she was only two. She loved Cindi’s voice and the way she dressed. I had old crinolines she wore over her ballet clothes and she rocked it every time she heard Cindi’s voice. Meredith passed away at seven. Meredith’s sister Stacie was able to meet Cindi and told her just how much those escape’s meant to us. Cindi stood, wrapped her arms around Stacie and held her as they both cried. She is such a gentle soul. Thank You Sincerely,Mom
  • “Dare to suck” That is a great mindset. Stop being afraid to fail. I love it.

Cyndi was a breakthrough for quirky girls. The hot girls and popular girls got all the attention. Then along comes this endearing quirky girl singing her heart out.

Cyndi was such an immediately arresting artist. Visual presentation was a key element, of course, but it was backed by genuine musical and vocal talent. Her career has had its ups and downs, but I'm always curious to hear what she comes up with. Great interview, nice to hear from the cowriters of this timeless classic.

"Time After Time" is my wife (of 39 years) and mine 'song'... We loved it the first time we heard it. we got married less than a year later.

Cyndi Lauper is nothing but a plucky, unstoppable force of nature. I'm so glad that she kept on doing what she loved, even at the likelihood of losing her voice.

Eric and Rob are legends in Philadelphia. I met them once and they were nothing but fantastic to me.
  • That part in the video where Cyndi reaches out to her mother, and her mom slowly vanishes, it just chokes me up every time. Even moreso as the years pass. It's a reminder to let your loved ones know you love them while you still can. ♥
  • @lechatbotte.
One of my absolute favorite artists. Her voice is hauntingly beautiful

Really hope she can get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She came close this past year and I'm hoping she gets in. Her originality, her multi octave voice, and the indelible mark she made on music history makes her one of my all time favorites.
  • All You Zombies is timeless and very memorable. These guys are brilliant and their pairing with Cindi was kismet.

On of the most amazing live performances I’ve ever seen was Cyndi Lauper. I’ve never before or since seen an entertainer captivate and control an audience like she did that night. Incredible….

Loved Cyndi’s music! Hard to believe she had to fight for the right to record her own music!
  • @breckhollis1089
She has a whole body of work, twelve or fourteen albums all togather, and some of her best songs are ones you've never heard. She won the Tony award for Best Origional Score for 'Kinky Boots', and that got her into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She absolutly deserved it.
  • @DavidT7291
Love Cyndi Lauper! Can't help but think about her part in We are the World. So different than all the other singers, but so powerful! Still gives me goose bumps to this day!
