Some Portland homeless villages are struggling to reach full capacity

Thousands of people live on the streets of Portland, yet some of the city's homeless villages consistently have empty beds. A Point-In-Time survey earlier this year counted more than 6,600 homeless people in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, though the number is likely much higher — and either way, the shelter bed capacity much lower.

That begs the question, how come homeless villages aren't always full?

I was a community health RN on the streets of Phoenix for 11 years. They want the drugs, drink and smokes more than anything else. They want help but only on their terms and that continues substance abuse. Not all, but 99%. All they looked forward from our visits was free clean needles and sox. They threw the tooth brushes and tooth paste away. Your best intention is not theirs.

You cannot help someone who does not want the help. No matter how much money you poor into the programs. If they do not want the help, all of that means nothing. I recently went to Mexico and i mentioned to the Taxi driver why I did not see many homeless. And his response to me was “you don’t work, you don’t eat, Americans get everything handed to no wonder Americans are seen as lazy”. I appreciated that man’s honesty.

Wait...you mean there are people on the street who would prefer to stay there rather than get treatment and have a roof over their head? Nahhhhhhhh......
  • They have a place so now make it illegal to camp out and clean up the town wtf
  • @yunnybae7556
I don't get it. if the camp's demand to be sober is a problem for full capacity, then at least for those who qualify to get in the shelter are better protected. I would much rather feel better if everyone at the shelter are well protected over night, than have a full capacity shelters that routinely have assult and rape.

2:57 You know...it amazes me that you have thousands of people locked up in prison for drug use and yet, you let these criminals clutter the streets with filth all the while on Meth, and Heroin...etc. WHY?
  • So you’re saying junkies don’t want to live in a place that doesn’t allow drugs? Wow! How many years of college did they have to go through to figure this out?
  • I'd love to live in one of those little wooden tiny homes. I live paycheck to paycheck, struggling to come up with $1800/per mo. I'm sober...hell, let me live there!

Can we stop calling this a homeless problem and call it what it is….. a DRUG problem.
  • @learrus
I wish I could live in a self contained unit with AC instead of an apartment building with noisy neighbours and no ac
  • Its a shame people rather live on the streets than follow simple basic rules.

The issue is many homeless are homeless because they dont want to be part of the system. They will not follow the rules of a shelter and are therefore on the streets. They choose not to do the programs to help, because they do not want to work or put in effort. Now sometimes that's addiction driven, or mental health but at the end of the day if the person does not want to be helped - nothing you do can or will help them.
  • @Kakiharae
Wait they allow alcohol? Wtf? I’m paying for this ? Fuck that
  • If you give them the option to continue to do drugs they will continue to do drugs, plain and simple. Either clean up, and be a productive part of society, or go to jail...the rest of us hard working citizens should not have to deal with our city, safety and belonging being destroyed. Do we not have any rules anymore?

Portland get your act together Clean the neighborhoods Homeless can’t dictate what is best for the city
  • I'm discusted at Portland's government. YOU FAILED BIG TIME. Vote for a change people.
  • Not all financially insecure people are addicts and not all addicts are financially insecure.
  • What on EARTH does: "Struggling to reach full capacity" mean? Huh? How far Left can you possibly go before you're not even in this dimension anymore?
  • @MsKimifer
For the same budget that is being spent on projects like these, the city could literally hand every homeless person 5k and tell them "Do what you think is best with this money. Check into a rehab, make a down payment on housing, move to a different state, or just shoot it straight into your arm and OD. Whatever. Here is the tool to get out of your situation. Now you CAN NOT be here on these street in 2 weeks time. Go."
