I know the 5.56x45 is America's cartridge that goes hand in hand with America's rifle, the AR15 or M16. With that said, by most measure the 5.56 is little more than an old varmint cartridge pushed into military service during the Vietnam war. At the time it made sense, the Army wanted a light weight bullet hose to spray lead towards an unseen enemy in a thick jungle. However, the 5.56 is really a 300 yard cartridge. After 20 years of war and our war fighters fighting in CQB to wide open spaces and longer distances, is the 5.56 still the best option? A lot has changed in cartridge technology and we discuss this in detail in this episode.
