Join me on a peak season sailing on the only non-overnight ferry service out of Aberdeen, Scotland. Let's also see how it compares to the slightly longer journey back again when it IS overnight. I think it's fair to say I prefer 'out-of-season' travel on this route!

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)

I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation.

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for YouTube Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

A busy chip shop is always a good sign... If the locals are supporting the place, Its worth it.

I love how you take the mundane every day situations and make them interesting. Liked the fish dinner and the pub hunt too. You do good work! Annoying people on the overnight trip. Such inconsiderate behavior.

Your videos are better than any TV shows I'm amazed you haven't been snapped up by the big media channels... but watch this space!

Amazing capture of the sunrise Steve. Too right, far too peopley for me, definitely an out of season trip.

I consider you as one of the great philosophers of our time.

We’ve always gone to Orkney from Scrabster, which is a much shorter crossing and you see the Old Man of Hoy! That night crossing looked terrible. Once again you’ve done a trip so we don’t have to! Thanks Steve.

We appreciate your sacrificing your sleep and body to give us some video of your journey. A good lesson for anyone who takes this ferry. Not all travel is great, you just hope it balances out - and it usually does - with the good stuff, the unexpected, the joy of discovery.

I really admire your stamina Steve it is more than I could put up with at my age and I always look for a cabin, thanks for taking me along it was an insight into what was on offer. Till next time stay safe and cheers.

As a kiwi (and a ginger 🤭) I had no idea what to expect when when I visited Scotland what I found was a strong sense of home and belonging Steve really love that part of the world and every time I watch a video of the hebrides I drop a tear and yearn for a vist to a place where my ancestors come from i can't wait to return ❤

Nicely highlighting the grim realities of our "lifeline" service there. Onboard accommodation has become ridiculously hard to book unless you're booking three months in advance. And nobody can tell why.

I live in orkney use northlink a lot

I take your point on busy overnight ferries and sleepers in corridors, but compared to the overnight train or coach, a ferry is so much better, more space to have a beer, and a chance of a good breakfast, plenty areas to move about it. Time would be too short to get a cabin unless you are doing the full journey, very enjoyable though. Thanks Steve

Great video Steve. The difference in duration in the crossing has to do with HGV-drivers. By making the nighttime crossing take longer they get their uninterrupted rest (as required by law). It is this way for all the ferries with nighttime crossings. If you'd be able to see the occupation for the sleepers in the inside cabins (you can't btw), you'd probably find those matching the number of HGV's on board.

I love that you show us these really low-cost trips....but I'm getting concerned about your diet and sleep!!! Thanks for showing all the wonderful places I couldn't hope to visit!
  • @jackyyuen1939
Much appreciate that you showed us the wonderful moment of the rising sun from the horizon 22:07.

5:04 in 2019 i travelled up saturday to catch the ferry sunday, slept by the cenotaph in my car. After boarding and getting my meal I went on to the upper observation deck

Wow, another interesting video. I am shocked they let people just camp out in all the public spaces on the ship, that doesn't seem very safe. You were a trooper for staying up and filming this for us. That loud music at 3 am was certainly extra. You will need to sleep for a couple of days after that. Amazing filming as always. Great job Steve. 😃
