Here's how to ROLL BACK your Fallout 4 Next Gen Update!
   • How to Roll Back The Fallout 4 Next G...

The Fallout 4 Next Gen Update will DESTROY your Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) install; this is going to wreck a lot of mod load orders and make playing with mods very difficult for thousands of people. Fallout 4 Script Extender is a Script Extender that makes modding and writing new code so much easier for Fallout 4 mods. There are thousands of mods that rely on this as prerequisite to work properly, everything from Extended Dialogue interface to massive mods like Fallout London or Fallout: Cascadia need Fallout 4 Script Extender to work properly. Fallout 4 Next Gen Update completely destroys this plugin, and will not work with your Fallout 4 install until F4SE is updated. According to the F4SE team, they're unsure of how long this will take since the Fallout 4 Next Gen Update breaks a lot of things in it, and even breaks a lot of mods using native code.

BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO! In this video I'll teach you how to stop the Fallout 4 Next Gen update from destroying your mods and how to keep playing with mods even after the update launches! It's very simple, and the process involves simply not updating to the next gen update until F4SE receives an update of it's own to become compatible with the new Fallout 4 update coming tomorrow, April 25th.

In this video I'll show not only how to stop the update, but how to use the Fallout 4 Script Extender launcher from your Steam library! This is an indispensible way to launch your Fallout 4 Modded Playthrough, and makes it extremely convenient since you'll have both in one place.

PLEASE READ: Roll back instructions are up! https://youtu.be/dDH0iLo6NyE The Next Gen Update is HERE!!! If you have not yet turned on your PC PLEASE DISCONNECT IT from the internet, THEN take these steps (use a phone to watch the video for instructions). Only AFTER you've disabled automatic updates should you connect to the internet!!!! I cannot provide support following the automatic update and I'm sorry if you weren't able to implement it in time :( I just learned how to do this prior to making the video myself so I couldn't post it earlier.

Bethesda: "We did our utmost to make sure it wouldn't break mods or customization" Except work around the literal most important mod, F4SE

Man, this is so annoying. I heard about the update, but didn't know it was today. Took a nap, and when I woke up I was gonna play some Fallout 4, excited 'cause I've been installing a bunch of new mods in the last few days, and then it refuses to launch. Now it's a massive inconvenience to try and rollback the game version. I really wish Steam would just let you update manually, rather than doing it automatically.

Man, Bethesda really pulled a "killing the golden goose to sell its feathers" move with this one didn't they? They entirely broke this game's ability to use ANY mod that runs through the current iteration of F4SE (which consists of the vast majority of the biggest and most highly regarded mods within the community) all so they could stuff in some useless fluff you already could've had from the Creation Club and add some teeny-weeny bug fixes that don't even focus on some of the BIGGEST problems this game has? This really should have just been a free (and most importantly OPTIONAL) DLC for those who don't care about mods. Thank God my Steam was being weird and refused to install any updates for any of my games without my express permission, so I didn't end up running face-first into this crock of crap.

Why is this update not optional? like the Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remakes or The Witcher 3, ugh, I ran the game through F4SE but when I closed it, it started downloading even with the "only update when the game is launched" option active, I paused it but now it is taking over 10GB of space and Idk how to get rid of that.
  • Friendly reminder that yes, Script extender do works without any problems with pirated games. But great video! And very necessary for people who don't want to break their stuff hahahaha
  • Thanks for all the advice brother, the one downside to getting a update for a game we love is all the mods breaking.

You don't need a rollback. Just make a second copy of modded game in the same directory as your Fallout game and name that folder FO4 Modded. Then go into that modded game and goto SKSE.exe. and make a shortcut to your desktop. Now goto AppData-> Local-> Fallout 4 Folder. In that folder you will see a file called "plugins" without the quotes. Create a folder. You don't need to name it. When you want to run the updated game, move the plugin file to the folder. Then launch the updated game, it will create a new "plugin" file on first run.. Then when you want to run the modded version, just switch the new plugin file with the one in folder. Both version will use the same save game folder as well. So don't mix up which save is for which games version. Now steam can update the game and you simply play the modded game until all mods are updated in the new update. Been doing this for all bethesda games since FO3 and Morrowind.

Hi dude, any way you know of yet of rolling back the steam update if its updated itself? I tried the console method and when i try to launch with F4SE it says Entry Point not found in the dynamic link library (Not even sure what this means lol) SO gutted it updated i only discovered fallout 4 days ago with loads of crazy good mods and now i cant even play it.

Every so often I get the FO4 Launcher coming up when I access F4SE through Vortex - will this cause FO4 to update at all? Any ideas how to stop this? I thought if I run Steam before launching into Vortex when I have been away for a while I might circumvent the Launcher. Thank you so much for your saviour video on rolling back - i just don't want to have to do that every time I get the Launcher.
  • @justx0912
i had my game set to always auto update.. but by gods grace steam decided to ignore the instructions given to it i'm glad nothing ever works the way it's supposed to :D
  • @Minnzy
I had autoupdates off but realised I had the "enhanced" texture dlc on which was messing with my mods so I deselected it and it updates the damn game :(
  • @jookm
I appreciate this video, though I use Mod Organizer 2 so I won't be launching F4SE from Steam, but rather through MO2. That is good to know though on how to add a non-Steam game. I might do that with some games I have that aren't through Steam.
  • There is a guide on the script extender nexus page, I got mine to work its pretty easy, you could do a video guide if you want
  • @Geckur0
if you have F4SE and you are launching it through steam like Snail is in the video, you might want to go ahead and hide the original FO4 in your library. right click FO4 > Manage > Hide this game. that way you wont ever accidentally update the game. If you ever need that version of Fallout 4 again for some reason, you can have it show itself again by searching for it in the bar at the top of your library list. it will be in a collection called "hidden" along with any other games you have installed but dont want to see for one reason or another.

Seems their gonna be another update so this video is still needed!
  • @Kill2Kiss
I didn't know about the update until I went to hop on and play today.. I hate how steam auto-updates, anyways thanks for the vid, hopefully this gets fixed up quickly.
