Mutant Meltdown: Analyzing the Downfall of X-Men Origins: Wolverine

In 2009, X-Men Origins: Wolverine caused quite a scandal when a workprint version leaked online weeks before the movie opened. Nowadays, that would be enough to kill a film, but the movie still pulled in respectable grosses worldwide. While no one remembers the workprint situation now, the film still has a terrible reputation mainly due to the shocking way the character, Deadpool, was used in the movie. Everyone thought Ryan Reynolds was ideally cast, only for him to turn up at the end of the movie as the “merc with a mouth” but - WITHOUT A MOUTH! Alas, this is only one of the many reasons why X-Men Origins: Wolverine has become an obscure entry into the saga. With Wolverine finally getting a legit team-up with Deadpool in next summer’s Deadpool 3, let’s look at their pretty terrible first movie together.

"It was so bad Ryan Reynolds had to go back in time in Deadpool 2 just to kick his own ass." That's some good writing. :)

I was a child when this movie came out, so I never got the chance to see it in theaters. When I first saw it, I loved it simply because I was in my opening phase of Wolverine being my favorite superhero. Now, almost 15 years later, I know it's a bad movie full of problems, but I can put it aside and still enjoy it.

I remember seeing this movie online before it came out due to it being leaked, as some of the VFX weren’t complete

I remember watching this in college and it being the first film I was ever really disappointed by. This was when I finally figured out that hollywood blockbusters could be bad

The weirdest thing is how it felt like fox never treated this film as canon... probably the right choice but.. I'm not sure an active universe of this level has discarded a film in the same way.

Question: How the hell did Deadpool bend his arms? Those swords are fricken long.

For some reason I'm one of the few who likes this movie. I didn't love it, but it was entertaining and fun...to me. 😆 🤷‍♀️ the Deadpool thing was hilarious and did fit the way they dealt with him before the transition. But I get why most people would hate, for sure...but it didn't really phase me at all, I just thought it was funny! Anyway, maybe it's partially due to how much people hate on it, I'm I like a rebel or something 😆 but I actually like the movie even more now, more than I did when I saw it in the theater! No shame. 😉

I did not hate this movie when I saw it. Mainly because I never read Deadpool. But I will say this: any time I need motivation to go to the gym, I watch Hugh Jackman pop out of the water on YouTube.

I enjoyed this movie Good thing I didn't know who Deadpool was when I saw it

I saw this in the theater with a free pass I want off the radio and I still wanted my money back. Deadpool was fine til they stripped him down. Thankfully, this movie lead to the real Deadpool movie and the change of the franchise Direction.

I do find it interesting that the new trailer for Deadpool And Wolverine uses footage from this movie when in previous years, it was largely forgotten and retconned because of how much of a trainwreak it was. The only time it was brought up again was for Deadpool 2 when Wade goes back in time to shoot himself in the head to "clean up the timelines" and to convince Wolvie to team up with him in the future, as a meta joke to Ryan convincing Hugh to return.
  • This was actually my first real introduction to Deadpool, for real. I honestly didn’t know too much about him prior to seeing this, so I just kinda went along with how this portrayed him. But nowadays, while I honestly cannot hate this rendition of Deadpool too much because of that, it is an unfaithful portrayal. Luckily, Ryan Reynolds did get a much deserved second chance to do Deadpool real justice later on (👍).

Logan and Sabertooth aren't brothers in the comics, his brother is Dog. You clearly don't read the comics.

I didnt hate Wade Wilson until he turned into deadpool. As I could tell Ryan understood what he should do. Then the last big fight scene he wasn't there for it was a stuntman ryan was brought back to shoot a couple close ups. That was another reason for taking the man's mouth away
  • I remember downloading the workprint without the effects 😂...it was just bad. When I saw complete version it mightve been worse
  • @mac5917
The fact I was a kid when this came out trumps all of this still, love it😂
  • Yea agreed on every point. At least it gave us the Wolverine Origins video game! Now that was an awesome game

Watched this movie back in the day. I was really hating this movie because they didn't explore Wolverine's origins deep enough and I would have liked a more well executed Weapon X story how Wolverine was captured and tortured physically and mentally by the scientists. How they treated him as a mere subject instead as a person. His loss of memory and how he got the adamantium onto his skeleton and the horrific combat test's he had to undergo to show his killer instinct and his escape from the Weapon X facility. That would have been a very emotional rollercoaster to watch on screen.
