This video was taped on the first day of Kindergarten. It shows a wonderful teacher establishing routines and extinguishing unwanted behaviors.

Notice the recurrent theme of speaking calmly, quietly and closely to the students, modeling this behavior for her students. No shouting from across a room. Love it. She is also constantly repeating classroom expectations.
  • I think people that write comments saying that this is a bad teacher because she looks cold and robotic have never been in a classroom before. This is the way it should be done: children paying attention and behaving, teacher not raising voice. I think this teacher is excellent and has everything any Elementary School teacher needs. My respect.

Ms. Silver was my literacy mentor last year. She is a fantastic teacher and extremely skilled in pedagogy. People commenting that she is cold are so far off. She is establishing her routines and procedures from day one, so the rest of the school year runs smoothly. It is about clear and direct expectations. Ms. Silver was an incredible person to work with.
  • This woman is a fantastic teacher! She is firm but fair. Not robotic but consistent and great at praising. Old school all the way. These kids don't look terrified, they look like they are listening and learning. Kudos Ms. Silver!!!!

She's firm, fair, and has a soft voice that she doesn't raise yet uses effectively. For all these children it is their first day of school, and for some it might even be their first experience in a group situation. While young children learn fast and want to please adults it can take a while for them to remember (in the heat of the moment so to speak) what is expected of them. I can imagine that someone coming from a non-education based background would feel she's being pedantic and perhaps even patronizing, however kindergarteners need lots and lots of repetition and clear instructions to learn how to manage their behaviour. They are still learning to manage their impulsivity and all of them are still learning basic social emotional skills. Kindergarten is said to be the most difficult year level to teach because it's kind of like herding kittens. I personally don't find her robotic at all, just consistent (and persistent!) A wonderful kindergarten teacher!

This woman is a fantastic teacher. I can understand how people who aren't in the education field can find her cold or a bit robotic. However, it's important to remember that this is Day 1 of school and she's laying the groundwork for classroom behavior for school. It would be absolute chaos if she didn't set protocols and correct bad behavior.
  • This is an example of great teaching. Keep in mind that this is the very first day of kindergarten. Yes, some of us (who are teachers) may do things differently; however, there are some wonderful tips that can be taken away from this video: how to manage a classroom without shouting, how to set routines from day one, how to speak in a firm yet calm voice, repeating classroom expectations, etc.

This educator is AMAZING! I love her response to "Is there math in kindergarten?" and her response of "What a great question...you can find all that out when you stay in the classroom." I love her redirection, her responses, and her mannerisms. Thank you SO much for posting this! I am going to begin my second year teaching, but it's my first time teaching K...I can't wait to use these techniques! I love learning from more experienced teachers <3
  • Some teachers are only into dancing and singing all day long... but I totally agree with her, kids need clear routines at the very beginning, so everything will run smoothly throughout the entire year.
  • She certainly has her own way of classroom structure and is good at it. The children are very attentive. I on the other hand have very good classroom management as well but do some things differently. I constantly praise and say positive things as she does, however, I am more outgoing. This goes to show that educators have to find what fits for them. Best of luck to every teacher out there!

This is amazing. After I started using this kind of demeanor in a previously unmanaged class, the results were visible almost instantly.

So great - perfect example. Loving firm kind and respect and addressing EVERY child with detail and explanations. Love it!
  • @tarasydnor5624
I really admire her classroom management and this was a perfect way to establish boundaries on the 1st day. Hats off to Ms. Silver
  • @mommyok4431
I love how she breaks it down for these kiddos.
  • She is a fantastic teacher. This is my 4th year teaching and I am going to implement her management plan this year. She redirects bad behavior and teaches them the correct routines. Start them early. I love this. Kids need a firm teacher especially the first few days of school.

Brilliant, speaking as another teacher, this is exactly what is needed on the first day, week or more of new school year. Setting herself and children up for a successful year

Outstanding teacher. She is instilling proper behavior and good habits that will serve her students well.
