Former US submarine commander L. David Marquet rated the realism of submarine scenes in popular movies, judging their technological accuracy as well as the depiction of life on board.

Marquet addresses the realism of nuclear crisis movies, such as "The World Is Not Enough" and "K-19: The Widowmaker,". He also rated the accuracy of standoff scenes in "The Hunt for Red October," "The Enemy Below", "Hunter Killer," and "Crimson Tide." He also breaks down the realism of costumes, tactics, and terminology from "U-571."

Is life on board a submarine, including confined conditions and drills, as depicted in "Das Boot"? Would Navy SEALs enter a submarine from a HALO drop similar to "Act of Valor", and is it possible for a submarine to hear music from the water's surface, like in  "The Wolf's Call"? Can holes on a submarine be plugged with pins and other metal objects, as we see in "The Simpsons"? Would nuclear missiles be triggered by dislodging in a ship interior, such as in "Aquaman"?

Marquet graduated top of his class from the US Naval Academy and served for 28 years on submarines, including as an engineer officer aboard the USS Will Rogers, then as captain on the USS Olympia and the USS Santa Fe. Having retired in 2009, he is now a Wall Street Journal best-selling author of "Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders."

The is guy is not only a sub commander, he looks like he has an arsenal of dad jokes. He’s super wholesome.

“The most realistic thing is the guy drinking beer under the water”
  • As someone that was actually on the USS San Francisco, I can confirm that running into the ground was in fact a very bad day. It was however not actually all that bloody, mostly concussions and broken bones. Unfortunately there was a single death but thankfully it was only one. RIP MM2 Ashley.

10/10 for Das Boot Didn't expect anything less from a sub commander
  • @AyAy008
"Basically, it was like a Miata with a Corvette engine." Ahh, I see you're a man of culture as well.
  • @shaggycan
I like how the farther you go back in time, the more realistic the film.

My father, who was in US submarines during World War II, considered Das Boot (The Boat) to be the most realistic submarine movie he'd ever seen. He told me: "It was a different navy in a different ocean but I knew what was going on and I knew why it was happening." I was also a submariner in nuke boats and I also saw the authenticity of that movie. --YNCS(SS), USN (Ret)

This dude was by far the most entertaining of the military commentators that I’ve seen on one of these videos. You can see by the excitement on his face the whole time that he fulfilled his dream job.

Me: "That looks fake." Expert: "This is actually very realistic!" Me: "I knew it."
  • This guy could literally start a Youtube channel on submarines and quickly garner a huge following. Very informative, passionate, wholesome, you simply can't ask for more IMO.

One of the best Reactors in this series. 1) Acknowledges that a film can be inaccurate but still good 2) Pointed out that a film can be inaccurate AND dangerous in that it pushes a false belief or movie troupe 3) Points out what is right and what is wrong with the clip
  • This guy’s personality embodies the submarine force. Incredibly smart, bit nerdy, very brave.
  • @pg955203
This guy's seems very friendly and down to earth, not the typical asshole commanders we see in movies. 10/10 guy.
  • My biggest beef with U571 was the US Navy capturing Enigma... which was already accomplished by the British. You could almost imagine an American commander saying, "Look, I captured an Enigma machine!' The British officer replies, 'Oh, jolly good. Put it with others, would you? There's a good chap.'

I loved this man! He was normal, not cocky, not boring, doesn’t like to hear himself talk. He was funny! I could watch more of these with him. 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍✌️

That man was one helluva Captain. I served onboard the Santa Fe with him. He helped me make TMC I have a lot of respect for him.
  • I'm a Navy veteran but I was on a carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) from 1996 to 1999, and then a CG, guided missile cruiser, the USS Gettysburg. I have mad respect for bubble heads. I worked at a VA hospital years ago and a fellow nurse was a career bubble head, he did 24 years and exclusively sub duty, all Boomers (ballistic missile subs) he retired as a Master Chief Machinist Mate. Thank you for your service BTW

Would have loved to have seen more Das Boot scenes in this. Best submarine movie of all time.
