/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */

Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers, show I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down Talk To Me.

-

The brand new horror is one of my favourite films of the year and throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down the hidden layers and details that you might have missed. We'll also be talking about the true meaning of the ending and explaining all the little thematic things that they do throughout the film.

I dont wanna just recap the story so if you're coming into this video I'm assuming that you've seen it but I will do a little bit of set up to add some context just incase you haven't. However I highly recommend that you check it out before this video and if you enjoy it then make sure you subscibe.

Now the movie was distributed by A24 and it follows a teenager named Mia who gets a little too up close and personal at a party with some spirits. Normally when I do that it leads to me face down in a bath somewhere but Mia and her friends brother Riley are pulled into a horrifying world of ghosts and ghouls.

  • for me i loved how ambigous the fate of mia's dad is. it can be interpreted as him leaving the hospital because jade mananged to save him and he healed his neck wound, or he is taking the elevator up to the afterlife. and mia cant follow him because she is stuck in limbo.
  • @aproticferret
The ghost was also losing the ability to mimic her mother. The ghost was slowly going back to looking like the drowned ghost that she saw. You can see the subtle changes in the ghost's appearance throughout the movie.
  • @MrDrezzy007
The actress playing Mia is one to watch for. She carries the whole movie and delivers an absolutely incredible performance.
  • @joshuagallant13
When mia walks out of the room after riley is possessed… you can see the candle is still lit on the table 🕯️
  • @tiarnanwoods8441
Can we talk about how they depicted limbo? One of the most horrifying hellish pieces of imagery I’ve ever seen in a movie. Exactly how you’d picture hell, brilliantly done
  • @GodLikeDevil
I came away with the impression that the rules given by Tuckett's brother and the other friends were genuine, and that the visions Mia was seeing of Riley suffering in Limbo are just the ghosts or malevolent entities manipulating her because as stated in the rules, "if you die with them in you, they'll have you forever". Riley's body was already rejecting the possession as his sister told Mia Riley was getting better... which is why the ghosts were pushing Mia to kill him already because they were going to lose their hold on him.

Her “mom” was actually the drowned lady…she starts to look more and more like her each time she contacts mia. Another YTer pointed out that the boyfriend’s initial possessor ‘outed’ the boyfriend. Also that the spirit that inhabited riley was maybe the first one that the drowned lady in mia said “he likes you”
  • @nhc7772
Her “mom” was never her mom. It was always that spirit that drowned cause you could slowly see her mother turning back into it throughout the movie. Each scene she’d have more water on her. Mia is even told at one point that the spirits can read their deepest thoughts so that’s why it knew how to act like her mother
  • I really think the hand at the end is a different hand. If you remember they say "the other hand is just out there"
  • @davids6686
Good on A24 for being the first in meeting demands for the strike, really like them on film and behind the scenes as a company
  • Loved the breakdown, Paul. I love hearing everyone's different interpretations. My take on Mia's death was that she actually sacrificed herself in order to save Riley and others from herself and how dangerous she had become as she was continually being manipulated by evil spirits. I think Mia throws herself into traffic rather than being pushed by her friend Jade or the evil spirit pretending to be her mother. Mia clearly has a realization when the spirit impersonating her mother tells her that “WE will take care of him (Riley) forever.” She knows that it’s not actually her mom and that she has been manipulated this whole time. Manipulated into stabbing her father, manipulated into nearly killing Riley. She sacrifices herself to protect those she loves. She knows she just stabbed her dad and that she is a danger to those around her. The subtle acting from Sophie Wilde shows that she has a realization of some sort, and she clearly takes her hands off the wheelchair right before it cuts to the crash. Leading me to believe that she jumped out into traffic rather than her being pushed by Jade or the spirit. That was just my take. I agree with your assessment of Duckett and his bro, and the end being a mirror of that, but I just like to think that Mia actually had more agency and choice in her own death rather than being manipulated until the end. There are loads of nuances and ways to interpret the ending, but I think you did an excellent job. Cheers.

Detail I'd like to point out - Riley who fell asleep next to Mia watching ' Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' - On that show you get up to 3 "lifelines" which include a phone call. We do see in the movie that she ignored 2 calls from her Dad. To me it symbolizes the 2 deaths - 1 being her mom then later 1 being her. Just a thought, but overall a great horror movie. The concept was refreshing to see!

The film is an allegory for addiction. Of course there are other elements to it as well, but most people who watch it think, "Why would anyone do that?" Why would you touch the hand in the first place? It seems extremely scary and dangerous. That's exactly what I thought, it makes no sense, but... I'm a recovering addict! 🤦‍♀There are SO many times in my life that I can look back on now and think, "Why did I do that?! I could have died! I could have become majorly addicted!" (I'm someone who has experimented with almost everything, but ironically, got addicted to wine...The "tame," legal stuff. That's what sent me to rehab and almost ruined my life.) A lot of times you watch horror movies and think that the characters are making stupid decisions (which they usually are), but if you watch this film and think, "That would never happen," you're just wrong. Almost every heroin addict had a moment where they decided, "I'm going to try heroin." Why? That's asinine. Why would anyone do that to themselves? But we do. The opioid epidemic is getting worse every day. So many of us have "touched the hand" and "invited the spirit in" even though it makes no logical sense. And a lot of people end up in a state of hell on earth because of it. What a fantastic film! I love "smart" horror. The scary parts were really scary and the story made sense. (Although I did walk away with some questions, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.) Too many horror films these days have a great premise but blow it by the end, but this one was strong from start to finish.
  • With regards to Mia's dad in the last scene...i feel he healed and that it took time..as in months...it's just things are moving real fast in Mia's time since she's dead...same applies to Riley as we get different shots of him being completely healed in the first shot and later discharged in the second.
  • @ElChris816
I reluctantly started watching this movie, and after the first ten minutes I was completely scuked into it. It's a really well done horror film and has quickly become one of my favorites.
  • @JCoelho
The spirits remain in limbo in this film because they died by suicide. The same as Mia at the end. The same idea as in the film Constatine.
  • @kleven7531
That ending was good... but does anybody else think that MIA was an unlikable character? That last half of the movie made me not care for her for all the things she did, and it felt weird because she's the main character...
  • @kelsssy
just finished the movie & came here. missed so much! i do think that the ghost she allowed to possess her the first time manipulated her the entire time. the ghost of her mother gets more “wet” & bloated - which is a reference to staying in water for a long time.
