What is Lupus? - Systemic Lupus Erythematosus explained by Prof Graham Hughes

Published 2016-10-12
"The traditional view of Lupus is the butterfly rash in young women, but we actually see 400 Lupus and Antiphospholipid patients in our clinic per month, and it is unusual to have a butterfly rash" (Prof Graham Hughes)
Prof. Hughes presents us with snapshots of different patients diagnosed with Lupus. One suffering from joint pains, the other in a wheelchair, another with ITP, and another suffering psychiatric illness. Regarding a diagnosis for Lupus, there are many symptoms to look out for, in which Prof.Hughes terms the ‘alternative’ criteria.

  • Very good presentation. It sure explains things to me. I love that you say not to limit to criteria. That’s exactly what my rheumatologist at Mayo said ❤️

Thank you so much for this presentation Professor Hughes. Absolutely brilliant. For years, I have never caught colds like others but have massive allergies. Thought I was just imagining that difference. Thank you for recognizing that patients are more than just a list of "in the box" diagnostic criteria.

You know I forgot to ask a question. When you have unique symptoms such as is being talked about in this video like the lack of colds etc. What is the best way to get doctors to believe and not dismiss you? Is there perhaps a video on this topic? Thank you.
