How I made my #starwars Captain Rex Helmet from Rebels

Published 2023-09-08
There are a lot of 3d helmet files out there to choose from. Choose wisely! I got mine off Etsy before I realized a few things I should have noticed before I was done printing. This helmet is missing the cheek marks (which I may add with paint later) and the stalk is not as accurate as I would have liked. Again, fixable at a later date but its more Boba Fett/Mandalorian than Clone Trooper. That being said, the print itself came out great and only required one modification before printing to ensure it would fit. Join me as I show how I paint and weather to get the finished helmet!

  • That came out great, well done. I'm using layer size of 2.0 for my Storm Trooper costume, and I'm running my filament at anywhere from 105 to 110% feed rate to minimise layer shrinkage and separation, which plagued me earlier in the project (probably because of the near-equatorial climate that I live in). Where I have encountered shrinkage/separation I've used a 3D pen to fill in the gaps. Not really welding, I'm using ABS for the costume, but I have a heap of PLA for the pen that I just want to use up, so it's just being used as a gap filler, and it's working really well for that task. I did some final sanding today on almost all the torso and arm parts and painted them with a white interior/exterior emulsion paint, two coats, and that has produced a nice finish that I can sand back ready for proper painting. Thanks for sharing this video, it's helped me to refine my thinking for the next step of the process for my own costume.

Rebels Rex has a completely different helmet. This one looks much more a realistic model, as it's also different compared to clone wars helmet.
