I'm a black american woman, and I'm glad this video popped up. I normally watch videos with my own hair type of course, and seeing women of ancient Africa with the same methods that women all over have been doing. Hair health is hair health. Happy growing ladies
  • I am an older black woman .. I always watch your videos.. take your advice on my hair and my children to achieve super long hair.. canā€™t wait for your protective tutorial on shorter hair.. I have shoulder length right now..
  • Fact. As a teenager I desperately wanted hip length hair, but could never quite get to waist length. Later, when my kids were little, I started wearing my hair in a single plait in the back for practical reasons and it shot down to mid-thigh! I finally cut it into a late 30's-early 40's long bob because people always wanted to touch it. Strangers would walk up behind me and PUT THEIR HANDS ON MY HAIR. I'd spin around ready to fight for my life and it was just some idiot complimenting my hair. So I don't wear it like that any more. But protective hairstyles do work, they do what products don't.
  • I think the biggest struggle for me with protective hairstyles is that I am very sensitive to any type of updo. I get a headache halfway through the day just from having my hair in a bunšŸ˜©

Important factors that have influenced hair care: historically, hair was washed more rarely, and with softer water (rain water or water from a well). Nowadays, we have much harder water with additions (chlorine etc). In order to avoid soap scum build-up, we use modern detergents which strip much more oil from the scalp and hair than the soaps used historically. Also, we use hot water and work up a lather etc, influenced by hair "care" commercials. By washing it less - with cooler water - gentle detergents or diluted detergents or soap - by filtering water so it's softer - and by adding oils, we can grow our hair much longer. I've tried it and it works.

I started your washing routine earlier this week! I already have hip length hair, but Iā€™ve always felt it was a bit thin and it always felt dry and unhappy no matter what ā€œnatural ingredientā€ brands I used. It constantly tangled and I found myself brushing all the time. One wash treatment and some light jojoba oil later and my hair is permanently silky! I havenā€™t seen it this happy in years!! Im hooked šŸ’–

I am 62 years old. My hair is about an inch below the back of my knees. I have had long hair all my life as far back as I can remember. Last short hairdo, I was 5 years old and my mother gave me a pixie cut and I hated it. I trim it once a year and take off a half inch. I treat my hair like each strand is a goddess and deserves special, gentle treatment. I shower daily, however I shampoo my hair 3 times a week, never more than that so it doesn't get too stripped of natural oils hair needs. I will not use commercial brand name hair products on my hair. I'm old school and use old school methods I learned when my great grandmother was alive. I am so blessed she lived to 107. I learned so much from her and passed that knowledge down to my kids and grandkids. I've decided the only way I am going to cut my hair (short - shoulder length) now, will be the day I can no longer care for my hair myself. Until then - I still have (at the least) another decade (10 years) left or longer, of these extra long reddish brown locks first. And amazingly, very little grey hair on my head and I haven't colored it since I was in my 30's, half a lifetime ago.

Protective styles is how I grew out my hair. My hair is super curly, I used pomades, butters, oils, and grease in my hair and after 3 months I noticed a lot of length. When I stopped doing protective styles my hair started to get split ends and wasnā€™t growing at the rate I wanted it to. So I recently put my hair in mini twist to grow it out longer again šŸ˜Š

I'm an Oirad Mongolian woman, and I'm proud to tell that my ancestors wore silk cases on the braids to protect them. šŸ˜Š

It took lots of work and care over a period of 10 years to get my hair from my waist to my tailbone. But I wore it down 90% of the time. After having babies, I started wearing it up 90% of the time (mom bun!). It grew from tailbone to fingertips literally by accident in a couple years!!
  • Wonderful video! I began growing out my hair during the lockdown and stopped coloring it. My hair is now below my shouldes and gently layered. I love my natural color. I only wear my hair down and styled lightly 2 days a week. I have learned so much from you and others. BTW: I'm 68! Never too late! ā¤ļø
  • As an East African, everything you said to protect long hair is something everyone in my country does as the norm (but not everyone sticks to it) Iā€™ve always done twisted buns, braids and updos, wash my hair every few weeks because it never gets dirty or oily + Iā€™m a hijab I so that provides extra protection and trimming every couple months
  • @Bianca-vr3ll
This just makes me realise how wise black/Indian/native people are for using oils, doing protective styles since forever and still using this knowledge!
  • @reneeiu
Finally! Someone wants to talk about health as it relates to beauty! It's so easy to find videos about harsh chemicals and styling techniques that destroy your hair but almost impossible to find good advice about how to preserve hair... thank you for posting this!
  • @annwamuyu8934
As an African woman , I am glad I found this video and the Ayurvedic oil recipe. Now I understand why I love simple protective styles
  • @VyvienneEaux
My hair comes down to my mid-thigh and I think you did a great job explaining this topic. I rarely wash my hair and keep it up in a supercoil (like DNA) most of the time. I have gone weeks without taking my hair out of the bun when I've been ill, and it stays. I figure nature already figured out one of the best ways of keeping a long strand from breaking.

Our family has been researching ancestral food & health for 10+ years (diet/nutrition definitely has something to do with modern hair health, in my opinion!). I've always thought there must be something better for our hair, too, so I was glad to find your hair video series. I moved to the Canadian prairies many years ago and have always felt that my hair should not be exposed to the dry winter air. I've been wanting to learn how to do my hair up nicely, but have always had pain from the ponytails/buns. My scalp is sensitive, so even bobby pins touching puts some pressure on that ends up causing pain. I'm looking forward to your tutorials and sure appreciate the educational info you include, too. It's good to know the "why." Thanks! - Katie
  • @angelique2934
My bestfriend and I had a bet going on, about who could grow her hair longer. In the end we both had almost hip-long hair. And I always wore my hair in a bun or braided, didnā€™t blow dry it often, etc. Wearing it open and down was so impractical šŸ˜… It got stuck in the car door, or it was impossible to put on a jacket šŸ§„šŸ™ˆ
  • Some folks may find, as I did, that combing my hair with a very large gap comb was much better for my hair than brushing it, which seemed to pull out too many hairs. Also I have found that an updo is actually way faster to get done than a short hairstyle, that requires a lot of curling or blowing dry and shaping. Iā€™m glad when I was a young mom I didnā€™t cut off my hair ā€œ to save timeā€. Iā€™ve saved a ton of money not getting my hair trimmed regularly and a lot of time not fussing over the style. My hair is below my waist.
