Pale Communion is the album where "new Opeth" really started kicking into gear, this is one of the songs that made me properly start liking their new direction, as big a fan as I am of the death metal Opeth as well. From the kings of progressive death metal to noveau royalty in classic prog rock! Edit: Really should highlight the rhythm section of Martin Axenrot on the drums and Martín Méndez on the bass, what a goddamn power duo for most of Opeth's modern discography!

It's such a shame that Opeth is not a much bigger band. The quality of their music is just so next level. They deserve to be a household name on the same tier as The Beatles. They may not do anything "new" in terms of composition but what they do is done so well and carefully put together.

I'm pretty sure the drummer at the time, Axe, won an award for this album.
  • Don't think ive listened to Opeth until right now. So many excellent influences...probably why this song feels familiar straight away.

Pale Communion is one of my favorite opeth albums and this might be its highlight. incredibly dynamics and great feel.

River from this album is also amazing, it starts out very chill and relaxing, like you're floating on a river and then it gets progressively heavier and proggier, like getting stuck in a wild stream. I'm currently learning it on bass and its soo much fun
  • I didn't really get this album when it first came out, I was still hoping for growls and bkast beats even after heritage (which I love).. but then with time this album grew on me and holds a very dear place now.

i love opeth, specifically this song. thanks for covering it
  • Micheal often uses patterns and keys that seem both uncomfortable and dissonant, so that when he brings you back to the beauty and clear harmony its like he has rescued you, given you relief, before you must go into the next part of the story...
  • @Tomisagrandad
Geebz I absolutely beg you to listen to River from this album 🙏

That abrupt turnaround that reminded you of Yes reminded me of something Mikael Akerfeldt said in an interview about the Metallica instrumental "To Live is to Die." He said Opeth wouldn't exist without that song, and he points to the super abrupt heavy-to-soft switch that occurs in that song, which is partly what Opeth is known for these days.

I have this album on Vinyl and it sounds so good
  • @easyji
The whole album is brilliant, takes you back to 70's progressive bands
  • @slowpace1984
Eternal rains will come, the drumming on that track is 👌
  • @kalas-kurt
What a great way to start the day 👌 Pure love coming from this end ma man! ✨
  • I call this era Deep Purple meets Rush, but I can see the Yes meets Pink Floyd.🤔
