In this video Heimler walks you through the structure and power of the judicial branch of the federal government which aligns with Unit 2 Topic 8 of the AP Government curriculum.
The judicial branch gets its power from Article III of the Constitution. There, provision is made for a Supreme Court, while Congress is granted the power to create inferior courts, which it did with the Judiciary Act of 1789.
The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States. Under it you have the Court of Appeals, and then at the bottom of the hierarchy is the U.S. District Courts.
The most significant power the Supreme Court possesses is the power of judicial review by which the Court can determine the constitutionality of laws. This power was not explicitly given by the Constitution but rather was established in the required case Marbury v. Madison.

Thank you so much Heimler, I was in AP world last year and I watched your 6 hour live stream. I didn't really know the content before since it was a hard year of online school, after however, I felt like an expert afterwards (I also felt like I knew you as a person after all of the content lol) and I got a 5 on my exam. So thank you so much, you probably singlehandedly got me a 5. You're the best. -Max

the structure and power of the judicial branch of the federal government. He explains that the federal court system consists of the Supreme Court, regional courts of appeals, and U.S. district courts. The Supreme Court has both original and appellate jurisdiction, while the lower courts primarily have appellate jurisdiction. Heimler also introduces the concept of judicial review, which is the power of the courts to determine the constitutionality of laws. This power was established in the case of Mar v. Mad

For those watching in 2023, the number of courts of appeals has changed since this video was posted, and there are now 13 (as adverse to 12 like before). Hope this helps :))
