What I love about Andy hoops is that he goes out of his way to find actually interesting nba stories that many people don’t know, instead of just talking about current media hot topics like so many other nba YouTuber.

Many of the players who went pro in the 1993 NBA Draft struggled with injuries and personal issues during their playing days. Chris Webber, Penny Hardaway, Allan Houston, and Jamal Mashburn were All-Stars whose careers were cut short due to injuries. Isaiah Rider and Vin Baker were also very good NBA players, but they were plagued by personal issues.

All I remember about Rider is when he came to the Lakers he talked a lot of trash and got destroyed by Kobe in practice, allegedly so bad it made him retire but that's hyperbole.
  • He was also part of the 2001 Lakers Championship team. He was their leading scorer off the bench during the season. But was not part of the rotation during playoffs

JR Rider's life and career should've been cautionary tale for all NBA players, but as it has shown with Ja Morant and more recently Kevin Porter Jr. - lessons hadn't been learned
  • @ReyKaf
I remember him when I played NBA Live 2003 and saw him as a Free Agent as a 81 overall player. Back then, I was shocked why an 81 overall player is not on a team

I grew up in Minnesota during Rider’s time. I very much recall them trading him after Garnett’s rookie season specifically to get him away from Garnett so he wouldn’t influence him. Garnett and JR had become friends. They also traded Christian Laettner halfway through Garnett’s rookie year to pave the way. Two good moves they made in an otherwise embarrassing collection of personnel moves attempting to build around KG.

That goatee seque 😂. I hate ads as much as the next guy, but I can’t hate on that. Well played, sir

His troubles started before UNLV. He played at Allen County (Kansas) Juco. I was in the stands when the rival crowd was giving him the business pretty good and he threatened to kill all of us.

I remember JR Rider was a great player to use in the NBA games in that era. He was a horrible teammate in real life but in the games he was insane.
  • @DungarooTV
JR Rider and Harold Miner were two of my favourite players in the late 90s but they both never gone far enough. Please also do a video on Luol Deng - the same thing happened to his career after leaving the Bulls!

Ahh JR Rider , from the mid 90s Minnesota Timberwolves The KG Era in Minnesota , nice to see one of these videos appear
  • @Kashed
Rider had the attitude of Lebron and Iverson put together. He thought he was bigger than the game, thought he didn’t need to listen to his coaches, and had the off the court issues. Problem was, he wasn’t as good as Iverson and wasn’t 6’8” and catered to by the league like Lebron has been.

If rider was playing today he wouldn't be in any trouble. Privileged lives now. You came 10 years to early
  • @17thNO
I remember this situation with JR Rider. He thought he was better than he was (and he was good), but then he started bucking at the wrong people in the league. Phil Jackson included.
  • @nocturne311
I started watching Minnesota during KG's rookie season. Rider was a problem. I remember that season he had great games against the 72-10 Bulls. Minnesota lost both, but the first one was close and Rider drained a bunch of threes. The second game was close too... until KG talked trash to MJ and the GOAT put the Wolves away in the 4th. Haha.
  • I often wondered what happened to Isaiah Rider. My dad gave me basketball cards as a kid, as I was getting into the NBA. His was one of them. I recognized his face instantly.

So in response to the question if another team has ever gotten rid of their leading scorer, the 94 Hawks did. At the deadline they were the #1 seed at the time and traded away Dominique Wilkins to the Clippers for Danny Manning and then lost Manning in FA at the end of the season. Wilkins was 34 coming off an Achilles tear but was putting up All Star numbers and the FO/ ownership didn't want to pay him. This would make for a good video imo as this is one of the worst trades a team has ever made at the deadline. What other team that has had a shot at a championship trades away their franchise player for nothing?
