A brilliant performance can help an actor completely disappear into a character. Then again, there are some roles where they will use a lot of makeup and prosthetics to help them transform, too. These actors went through complete facial transformations to get into character. Many really paid off, as quite a few of the actors became almost completely unrecognizable.

Gary Oldman in Hannibal was haunting! Didn't recognize him at all and it stuck with me long after leaving the theater... did, however, laughed out loud when he was eaten by the pigs... got quite a few mortified looks from other audience members LOL!
