🇰🇵North Korea, or officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), stands as one, if not the most isolated major tank manufacturer in the world. Sometimes thought of as a relic of the Cold War desperately clinging onto existence, the country, sometimes known as the Hermit Kingdom, has long wanted to assert its independence from the Soviet Union and China when it comes to its military equipment, long before the Soviet Union even collapsed.

The country’s military industry started becoming increasingly independent in the late 1960s. Since then, it has put out vehicles differing more and more significantly from their Soviet or Chinese ancestors. Despite the harsh interruption of the 1990s crisis and famine, the 2000s have seen a significant renewal for North Korea’s tank industry, with a large variety of new vehicles introduced since the start of the 21st century.

One of the most significant and iconic of these developments is the Songun-Ho main battle tank, unveiled during the 65th anniversary of the Worker’s Party of Korea military parade. When unveiled, it was one of, if not the North Korean MBT that appeared to differ the most from the T-62 on which the DPRK based its Chonma-Ho series of main battle tanks.

This video could probably have done with a sort of timeline graphic, the various models get confusing easily. Nonetheless, interesting stuff. Thank you to TE team

Fact: some believe that the M2020 tank models we saw recently is actually a deeply revised design - both in its appearance and internal technologies - of Songun-Ho, combined with import technologies from China and Iran.
  • Songung-Ho is a name that rolls off the tongue so well. I don't know what it is about it and the Popkung and Chonmna-Ho tanks, but calling your shit Pegasus and Chariot is so badass. Lesser communist states would be tempted to name their shit after high ranking party members.
  • SO UH...one note, Chonma 215, 216, and Songun did NOT use smaller roadwheels, that was a mistake I made back in the day as well, they are identical to regular T-62s but because of the layout changing and the hull being slightly lengthened they could afford to just barely squeeze a 6th wheel in in fact the T-72 wheel is only SLIGHTLY smaller than that of T-34/55/62 series, and in fact at some factories and repair shops they often use old T-55 wheels with the rubber shaved down a bit to transport the tanks around as to not damage/wear out new T-72 ones anyways, Overall Great work! EDIT: One other thing, I do actually believe the Norks saying the songun has Composite, there are OBVIOUS weld lines conveniently around the "cheeks" of the turret, which could be exactly where it is installed, and if thats the case it could also explain another reason for the turret being "taller" as to move all the gear back so the Composite could fit
  • The thing i always wondered with North Korean made tanks is, have they ever performed a modification on the Soviet-style tanks they made to perform better in mountainous terrain? Because Korean peninsula have a mountainous terrain, and i feel that Soviet T-series tanks will not perform well in that kind of terrain, mostly due to the little gun depression, and the lack of hydropneumatic suspension like the ones found on South Korea or Japanese MBTs.

The Songun Ho always makes me think that there was actually some Chinese influence on the Korean design, the overall shape of the hull, and especially from a side view, is quite similar to that of the ZTZ-96 series, with a gradual slope towards the engine deck, as opposed to the Western "hump" type of engine deck or Soviet flat style.

you can spamming Grenade launcher to light vehicle, shoot the choppy boy with manpads and some kind of Jets, and shoot atgm, kinda funny but only in war thunder i hope gaijin added this vehicle

I doubt the inclusion of ATGM's is for improved penetration as compared to the main gun. It's far more likely that the ATGM's are to compensate for a lack of accuracy at longer ranges, indicating drawbacks of the primitive fire control systems that North Korea has available.

Yes finally more videos on North Korean vehicles i honestly think the best videos are the ones about lesser known vehicles like Italian tanks from WW2 or Hungarian or Japanese etc, etc

Ah yes... The Chonma-Ho. A pain in the ass especially if it were deployed in massive number in War game:Red Dragon

THEME SONG - If it's driving you crazy wondering where you heard the chord progression before, it's Space Lord Mother "Mother" by Monster Magnet from 1998. The radio version in Philly and other good places, second Mother i the chorus was originally a four letter word starting with F

16:59 video was great as I love North Korean weapons but when the Half Life 2 music started this became a legendary video.
  • @chiriematthieu
I lire how they cut à hole in the front turret appliquee armor for the driver head.
  • @matthewwagner47
With help from Iran the DPRK may have modern armored vehicles. North Korea's possible extensive underground weapons factories maybe able to produce very effective armored weapons systems. Including mobile artilery and MLRS(220mm) type vehicles. This is 1990's early 2000's information friend.
  • That awkward moment when your closest ally gave a more advanced warmachine to your rival neighbor than you.
