Creating Community on a School Bus | Curtis Jenkins | Turn the World Outward

Published 2022-09-13
Curtis Jenkins loved to be called "just a bus driver." He understood the responsibility of taking kids where they need to be and knew it wasn't only about transportation. He wanted to create a safe and empowering space where his students would start and end the day knowing they mattered. Curtis' bus was a classroom and a community. His decision to set aside money from his own paycheck to buy Christmas gifts for the students drew national media attention.

Richardson ISD, recognizing the impact Curtis was having, promoted him to a district-level position where his influence now extends to all 39,000 students in the district.

Curtis Jenkins received the Turn the World Outward award from the Arbinger Institute in 2022.

You don't need money to be kind, you don't need money to love. I wish those words would reach and cause a a positive impact to a wider numbers of people

omg if this doesn't touch your heart you don't have one. Imagine a world where type of person leads our nation. Leadership from the heart, commitment from the soul and an unyielding, unwavering determination to make life for others better. Then we would be the nation we were meant to be. Curtis Jenkins, thank you so much for being great. For teaching and reminding me that it isn't about who you are its about how much you give.

Delegating roles for the kids is a way to show the kids leadership skills which these kids will be inspired to be in life. Good job, Mr. Jenkins.

Mr. Rogers from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood would be immensely proud AND inspired of you, Mr. Curtis. As I am myself. Thank you for being yourself and with that, teaching kindness, discipline and mindfulness to those kids. Your name... I'll make sure to remember it as one of my role models.
