Developing a horror game can be difficult, especially when balancing serious themes like family strife and PTSD. Ad Infinitum balances this well, delivering an intriguing first-person adventure as a soldier struggles to escape a never-ending cycle of psychological trauma.

The visuals are on point, the puzzles are decent, and the backstory is compelling. Problems emerge when accounting for the horror elements. They're just not executed as well. Throw in some iffy stealth mechanics, strange AI behavior and a fair amount of jank for good measure.

It isn't to say Ad Infinitum is an awful game. It has appeal in some areas, but its psychological horror leaves something to be desired, especially when competing for screen time with other narrative beats.

I adored it honestly. I think people who didnt might not have an appreciation for atmosphere and storytelling. This isnt a "horror" game in the traditional sense. Its one nightmare which makes it amazing. And honestly? I did get spooked a bunch of times lol so well worth the playthrough. Through the first half of the game i was walking incredibly slow, fearful of everything. That fell off a bit when i realized that there wouldnt be tons of scares but the atmosphere more than made up for it. The most beautiful part was in No Man's Land with the gas. The artillery going off in the distance, the wind blowing through the barbed wire. Chefs kiss.

the words "copious" and "nothing too crazy" don't belong in the same sentence

This just makes me want to go play Amnesia : Bunker again.
  • I think it could’ve used more active scary elements in the manner parts but the fact that the story is of a deeply traumatized family nothing is actually trying to hurt they player is nice

Why aren't you showing the things you're talking about? Isn't that why it would be a video instead of just an article to read?
  • Blown away by the story in this game I really liked it. It is janky but I like a good creepy story and this nailed it.

  • @Shorty_Hutch
Is this game similar to layers of fear where it's all psychological and no danger?

It is not a shooter but a psychological horror. I am glad it is not a shooter, it would have been boring.
  • There are so many mediocre games in this style in the market, i wonder what made you guys decide to give this one a full review if its just another unremarkable game on the pile?
