“Neuroprosthesis” Restores Words to Man with Paralysis

Researchers at UC San Francisco have successfully developed a “speech neuroprosthesis” that has enabled a man with severe paralysis to communicate in sentences, translating signals from his brain to the vocal tract directly into words that appear as text on a screen.

  • If this technology could be sped up a bit...as in faster decoding-to-speech...the person could use a voice activated controller like Alexa to convert that data into actions making the person much more independent and able to care for themselves.
  • That "actual study footage" had some seriously slanted text compared to the display angle. Was it touched up for readability?

    Translating to sounds rather than written words should be easier and would reduce the error rate.
