Starting a business is all fun and games until you're eating ramen everyday and using your kitchen as an office space -- hear SoundCloud's co-founder's story to success filled with a lack of funding, innovative marketing ideas and heartfelt anecdotes.
It wasn’t long ago that Brandon Leibel attended San Diego State University with dreams of working in the movie industry. He graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in television, film and new media. However, Leibel’s love for San Diego pushed him to stick around, opting for a sales position at a local insurance company.

After working for the company for less than a year, Leibel, along with his two best friends, decided to quit their jobs to start their own company. Extensive surveying and tireless experimentation resulted in Sand Cloud: a popular beach apparel company that has expanded its operation from Leibel’s apartment to a 2,000 square foot warehouse within a few years. Leibel is eager to share how he reimagined traditional business models with his fellow Aztecs. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

What’s more important then money? The balls to consistently get out of your comfort zone and go for what what you want. 99% of people are not willing to do this, and settle.

This had me so ready to CRY. No one has a stronger drive than someone who's starving to succeed.
  • The title of this talk should be "It does not take A LOT of money to START A BUSSINES", but people I am sorry, money still makes a lot more money than "no money", that is the way it is.
  • Thanks... Very motivational. I'm a South African. I'm attempting to build a business to rid unemployment.

Even better title: How I Became Successful At Business By Being Terrible At Uber. Also, brilliant.

He got money, or things of value that he sold, he also got a friend that he could live in a apartment with which is cheaper. So many conditions i knew it was too good to be true.

I sold all my furniture and bought a box of beach towels. Now I live in a house with furniture made from beach towels and work at McDonald’s. Thanks guy

Lack of money is going to finance your resourcefulness and make you successful. Word brother.

At first I was thinking, wow TED talks have really fallen in quality and content. Then I noticed, it is not a TED talk, but a TEDx which means anyone come talk even if you're wrong.

The experience shared in this video simply informs me even more that life itself is and endless resource that we can tap from and make our dreams a reality and not the make money to make money attitude.
  • I don't know...I'm all for supporting and motivating the startup community--I did one myself--but his entire talk just reinforced that it DOES take money to make money. Apart from commenters stating the obvious (they actually squeezed out money to get money), his team did all those efforts and even went social media superstar but still little to no sales. Then he wraps up that after getting backing and funding only then did they go millions of sales
  • Amazing speech! You need money to make money. However, money is made with passion, hustle and trust. So this is all it takes to start and then to make it a success!
  • HOT DAYUMN! So that whole summer vacation I spent enclosed in my living room in front of my computer, watching tutorials and reading blogs on how to do the things I need for my embryo-stage business was NOT time wasted?! You've given me hope. Thank you.
  • @BrandonAEnglish
Having money or not having money aren't determiners of success. It is the drive and passion we have, which provides our natural motivation. Any motivation we might otherwise artificially inject will never assist us if we are laboring away at causes or work which we neither value nor feel passionate about.

Many people think there's an easy road, there's not, one way or another you'll find problems, the whole point is to solve them! That's why money is not a real obstacle, but something you need to solve if you want to start a business and learn and do what it takes! Great Talk man, very inspiring!:) I'm also sick of eating beans and rice, but it's part of the road and so far I'm happy! Wish you everyone great success on your projects:)

I’m starting my small business but I’m a bit lost into this, My lack of study makes me overthink so much when comes to a decisive moment I have a problem since child dealing with maths and was slow learning in this subject, But I’m trying everyday to develop something from my head to use as a tool in order to achieve the success
  • Whoever looks for success, always makes a mistake, thinks that the important thing is the arrival, but what is really important is the trip, not the arrival. And you only realize the error when it's all over!
