My thesis defense was a 30mins speil and 2 rounds of 5 questions (one from each panel member) with optional questions allowed after each round. Each of them was an expert in a different thing, so using that information, I managed to anticipate every question and had backup slides for them.
  • An additional rehearsal method is to record yourself as if doing an on-line You-Tube presentation, and then try watching it back. You may find that you can't get to the end of the recording without some car crash or running out of steam. And then when you watch it back... even worse!

This is what I did and my advice: do not think about the day, I mean, try to put these thinkings away and just think about preparing perfectly the defense without having in mind things that could get you nervous. It is something that always worked to me. Apart from that, I couldn’t but agree 100% with you Andy.

Great content, I 100% agree and did everything you stated here, but wished you came out with this before I defended 2 weeks ago haha

The part about taking breaks is rare, most people I've seen (including myself) just plow through. If people look at it from an audience's perspective, the audience can't keep up besides a thesis in general has very complex topics that not everyone knows. Actually, it's more common in business presentations to take pauses for the audience to look at your slides over and then speak. It's odd that colleges don't have a science presentations course... either that or I need to have took my public speaking course more seriously!😅

Can you make a video about your own defense? Because there are different types of defenses in different countries. For instance, here in the Netherlands, you don't give a presentation, you just answer questions for 45 minutes and that's it. Also, did you defend your thesis right at the end of your 3 year period, or was it after your contract had ended?
