Wisteria is a gorgeous plant but you'll need to prune it twice a year to keep it looking its best. In this film, National Trust gardener Andy Darragh shows Rebecca Bevan, the author of The National Trust School of Gardening, how he cares for the wisteria at Fenton House in London.

You can get more advice from our gardens teams across the UK in our book The National Trust School of Gardening available in our shops or from shop.nationaltrust.org.uk/

  • It is basically like a good haircut. Don't be afraid to lop it off good and neat. I have some on an arbor and the other grows on my cottage. Floribunda. Enjoy!!

  • Thank you. The post was very helpful. We've recently moved into a home with a very healthy but wildly look wisteria that I hope to train onto an archway.

my new wisteria i planted is growing well. The problem is training the news vine growth. The new vines just die on the end about 6 inches back. I am barely moving them and they still die. I am doing this during the summer. What am I doing wrong.

My wisteria is 8 years old. Lots of greenery but never a flower. I pruned it as instructed but still no joy.
