The career of Matine (by Silver Moon x Matador) was that of a shooting star rising high and then unfortunately crashing down like meteorite. Though she was well known in Denmark as a young dressage horse, she made her international break through and fame at a very rapid speed. Within one year she premiered at Grand Prix level and won individual silver and bronze at the 2006 World Equestrian Games.

And that is when her career virtually ended. The mare competed successfully at a few more World Cup qualifiers in the winter of 2006-2007 but she injured herself slipping off the trailer at the 2007 World Cup Finals in Las Vegas. As of then Matine continously struggled with injuries and never returned to the show ring.

In August 2009 Møller announced that Blue Hors had given up the fight to get her back to full health. They gave the mare a peaceful retirement as a broodmare in the field and had planned on inseminating her with Blue Hors Zack' semen this spring. Matine spent her last days being "a horse" with her buddy, the retired team horse Blue Hors Cavan.

Matine's silver medal winning kur to music is to date one of the most viewed equestrian videos on Youtube.

Matine was bred by Inger Katballe and became 13 years old

The world famous dancing grey mare, Blue Hors Matine, was humanely put down today after a tragic accident in the field. A passer-by had noticed there was something wrong with the grey mare in the field and notified a staff member at Blue Hors.

"There was no doubt about it that Matine had broken her left front leg at the knee," said the saddened Blue Hors manager Esben Møller. "The vet immediately diagnosed that there was no way possible to save her life."

I am so so sorry for the devastating loss of this special mare. To all connected in her life sending heartfelt thoughts and prayers for lifetime memories of joy from her life...

Every day animals give their unconditional love to us, and unfortunately there are those who are cruel to them. They will give their heart until it bursts, but the apathy of those who profess to love them is blatant. The tragedy is that we have just a glimpse through a window to witness the beauty and grace of these wondrous souls. Their lives are shear he'll behind the beautiful mask of their tormentors. It matters not to them what we see as long as it meets their desires. Until we speak up for those who cannot they will continue to suffer in silence. Much luv2 this beauty. Her essence lives in all our hearts.
  • R.I.P Beautiful girl. I can’t believe it’s been almost 13 years since we lost such a legendary horse 💔
  • I was there. What was so impressive was the majority of us had never seen the pair. It was like who the hell are they. It was amazing to watch, the crowd was electric. We were so excited to witness these unknowns kick butt and get on the podium. Yes we did talk about the tail. But every horse has something and she was special. The crowd loved her. I will never forget it. RIP beautiful lady. ❤️

Knowing now what she probably had to endure with him makes it a lot less pleasant to watch. But there will always be something special about Matine, her attitude and the effort she put into everything. She really looked like she wanted to please Andreas the best she could. So sad we had so little time to enjoy her.

She was a beautiful Queen. I'm so very sorry to hear about the stress and pain she had to endure. Now I'm so sad and crying for her. RIP Matine. 😢
  • I stopped counting how many times I have watched this video, This may just be my fav of all videos, no matter music, prophecy or horses. what a class act this horse was. it would have ben something to be their and watch it live
  • Absolutely stunning - to keep In time with the music that closely is so difficult and this mare is so beautiful. That being said the Dressage world is going through what all the rest of the “ upper crust and wealthy “ have gone through, more flash, more extension, more height at the trot. The fact that this mare is WRINGING her tail the entire time is discomfort… idk how she passed, and I’m so sorry such a magnificent horse is lost to the world. RIP.

I've almost never seen a horse keep this good time to music, and then to transition from one speed to another, equally in time. Sublime. So very sorry she was gone too soon.
  • @Shimco
For YEARS i have loved watching her with the volume down but listening to all kinds of songs on my speaker. She can dance to anything
  • @nurscathwill
Dressage is a painful experience for living loving horse souls. I hate anything that cause them one ounce of pain. So glad this beautiful mare went on the PEACEFUL PASTURE!
  • OHHHHHH this video just popped up on my feed again and I was soo happy to see her again. What an incomparable beauty.
  • All these years later and this is still the most impressive but concerning performance I've ever seen. Any sport horse can be classified as an "elitist" at this level, but the work good & bad that went into this... cannot be ignored. I hope this lovely mare rests easy & that those who practice these sports take care of their animal partners over what they train for.

She is my favorite ever! Matine danced and put her heart into everything. I loved seeing her and still go back to her videos to enjoy her. R.I.P Beautiful Girl who is the G.O.A.T.!
  • @stellarraven
This horse is so beautiful. I don’t think I have seen such a beautiful shade of grey before on a horse before. ❤🐎
  • @senka2578
‘Sensational stuff’ as the horse is literally churning butter with that tail throughout the entire performance.
  • @Moonatjejen
I've never understood why this performance was so lauded and why the comments on the video are 99% positive. I've always thought the horse looked super unhappy and tense (that constantly switching tail!) and now, having watched the Helgstrand documentary, I understand why.

At the time when this mare hit the scene we all thought she was impeccably fabulous, but as we have become more educated we can see that she was trained with hyperflexion pretty strongly. She was an incredibly compliant mare to suffer all that abuse in stride.
