Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros and established a dynasty of dragonlords. Yet his two sons, Aenys and Maegor, nearly destroyed that new dynasty right after it began. Aenys Targaryen was the second king of Westeros, and sat the Iron Throne from 37-42 AC. In that time, he quarreled with his brother Maegor and his aunt Visenya, he burned bridges with the Faith of the Seven, and he sat waiting in his castle when faced with rebellion.

Next video will cover Maegor the Cruel's reign of terror.

Definitely knock points away from Aenys for not even trying to save his kids when he learned they were captured...sometimes you gotta be brave even when you're worried and scared.

Ironic that Aenys’ son, Jaehaerys, was nothing like him and his grandson, Baelon, was nothing like him yet it was his great grandson, Viserys, who was most like him.
  • Well to be fair on your point of Aegon and Rhaenys only having Aenys. Rhaenys did die during the first dornish war. Leaving Aegon unable to sire more children with her. And Aegon and Visenya's relationship grew increasingly distant as the years went on. Likely explaining why Maegor was the only child born between them.

“Still incestuous enough to get the job done” are the real Targaryen words
  • Poor Aenys grew up thinking he was the luckiest man in the world as everyone dotted on him and sought his favour and friendship only to find out they would rebel against him if they thought it advantageous
  • Aenys was basically tytos Lannister as a Targaryen on the iron throne.

The thing about maegor and aenys is that they are two sides of one coin. One was overly nice and one was overly harsh. Because of his overly nice attitude aenys almost ruined everything his dad bulit but at the same time everyone tries make it seems maegor was this terrible king when really he just fixed most of most of aenys’s mess but har very little compassion
  • I feel bad for Aenys, he seemed like a genuinely good guy like viserys but just didn’t have the heart for a position he had no choice in. Much like viserys he loved his brother as well but both relationships were obviously pretty rocky

Maegor saved that family several times over. It is worth considering the Old Town Conspiracies when it comes to his legacy! Which is not to say he did not do crazy questionable stuff!
  • I seriously can't wait to see Visenya Targaryen in live action🤩🤩🤩😂😂😂😂😂😂

I deeply enjoyed your astute statement of “the dumb dumb Aenys”
  • If Maegor stayed in Pentos after Aenys died, all of his nephews and nieces would have died shortly afterward, well maybe not Alysane since she’d probably be fought over as a bride so another outside house could rule the realm, so it was really Maegor that saved the house from extinction even though he did kill 2 members of his own house

Aenys reign is a perfect example of the ideal that the most dangerous time in a newly established ruling dynasty's reign is the second king. The Lords didnt rebel against Aegon because they both respected and feared him, as he had united six kingdoms through not only Fire and Blood, but also through wise and just rule, and respect for Westerosi traditions. Aenys didnt have that same respect, and so the lords would obviously test him, and obviously found him wanting. The fact that House Targaryen survived Aenys reign is a small miracle. Maegor, as cruel and vicious as he was, probably saved House Targaryen because he established the fear of their house in the Lords of Westeros, and breaking the militant power of those hyper conservative jackles of the Faith.

Maegor was arguably not a "bad" king. Bad being ineffective. He was quite effective. He was a cruel and horrible person. But he was an effective, strong and successful king.
  • @RollMeAFat1
Bro if he was king in any other time period I feel like he would’ve been so good, the ways he tried to make peace with his brother seemed so effective until you remember that his brother was maegor
  • @KevinDiazx11
Out of Aegon the conqueror sons I like Maegor over Aenys
  • @Argos-xb8ek
The sad thing is Aenys seemed like a good man with a good heart but took being well liked over being decisive
  • Very under rated video and channel, keep up the quality work !
