Licuala Fan Palm

The Licuala Fan Palm (Licuala ramsayi).

This video was taken at the Licuala National Park at Mission Beach, North Queensland, Australia.

The Fan Palm is the main tree species in this rainforest. Fan Palms can withstand the commonly waterlogged soils. They have shallow roots which alllow them to absorb surface food.
Palm stems are very flexible and adjusted to the wet environment and cyclones. In strong winds the fronds fold up and the stems bend.
Fan palms are very productive and support a wide range of animals.
This Palm has small cream coloured flowers followed by fleshy orange fruit. The fruit is a favourite food of the Southern Cassowary.
Fan Palms have only one growing tip, the "cabbage". If this is killed the plant dies.

I'm a palm tree fanatic. I love watching palm trees swaying in the wind. It brings me back memories of my vacation in Laos. Beautiful palm trees dancing in the wind behind shiny golden Buddhist temples. Very exotic!

Yes ... there is something soothing about palm trees. Coconut palms are one of my favourites.

It is Incredible how many different palms there are in the world. Another palm that is pretty is the lipstick palm with its red trunk.
  • So nice! The palms are beautiful from every angle. The tips of the fronds are very interesting looking. Thank you:) BOP
