terrifying and awesome. Imagine being in pitch black darkness then hear that clicking, getting closer and closer.

It's amazing how incredibly well evolved sperm whales are to be able to breathe air and still survive being able to dive to that incredible kind of depth.

I love how intelligent this animation makes the whale look. Sperm Whales are very intelligent animals.

Gotta love how it all starts with “search and destroy.”

Man, I can't imagine what life as a sea creature is like. I see open water and I'd be terrified to be in it. Being unable to see the bottom, just the black abyss, absolutely chilling to behold. It's not really even what lives down there that scares me. I guess you'd have to be the biggest animal on Earth to be brave enough to hunt in the black depths.

It is called sperm whale because the sticky white substance in its 'melon', the fatty tissue that makes up its forehead, was originally mistaken for sperm. More info on how they use their melon for echolocation can be found on the Whales Tohora exhibition website.

Yes, it's computer graphics, but it's somehow incredibly creepy and atmospheric.

i have hard time imagining getting around without sight, humans are very dependent on it. the fact that a huge whale can get around in a boundless ocean without it (mostly) is what makes this video (and whales) badass!!
  • @Trebgah
This was done really well. I love the effect you added for the sonar
  • I remember seeing a video of this when they had that Whale exhibit at the Field Museum in Chicago. I was OBSESSED with sea life at the time, and this video always takes me back to that time. It had to be around 2009 or 2010, and I was around 8 years old at the time.

Sperm Whales are amazing. They can dive very deep to hunt. Their lungs were made to collaspe adaptable to the pressure deep in the ocean.
  • Am I the only one that thinks that Sperm Whales deserve a cooler name?

Man, I remember seeing this on YouTube when I was a kid! So many memories, back when times were simple.

Cont'd: The last time I looked at these data was nearly a decade ago, and the depth distribution was based on ~ 75 well-localised specimens. The juveniles can be found in the upper few cm of the water column; they migrate deeper as they grow.

Thanks for that. Really glad you like our videos :) Florence, web admin at Te Papa

Image being a fish in the dark and you start hearing this noise get faster and louder knowing something massive is coming right at you.
