Jay’s Stair Makeover

Jay gets the whole family involved in making over their inside staircase. In the 1st video (of 2) Jay removes the old carpet, skirt boards and treads and replaces them with some beautifully stained stair treads and painted risers. As usual not everything goes as planned but like always Jay gets it done and Stephanie loves it!!

I’d be in awe and gratefulness. Paying someone else to do it. OMGOSH. It’s so much work. I’m TIRED!

One trick for the Knots is shellac over it before you paint, or use BIN Primer (wait, Jaime just told you that LOL.)

"This project had its ups and downs." -Jamie probably

we are glad to see you doing well jason , please dont stop uploading
  • I just have one thing too say ( that's one way to do it ). Regarding ( sturdability ) I can't find it in my dictionary. However I did find ( stable, stability. ) God bless you and your family.
  • I do miss Ray, you guys have such great chemistry. But the content is still great!
  • Jay and Stephanie, Wonderful project together. The way you got your stair tread and riser length, and angles is the way carpenters have done it for hundreds of years. It is quick and accurate. I like your videos so keep them coming. John in Missouri Valley Iowa
  • A tip for Jay. When you rip the back of the tread, rip it on a 5 degree angle. That way just top tip of the tread is the only thing touching the riser and you can push it in tighter. I also bevel cut both ends of my risers. Tricks to make your life easier.

Square shovel makes quick work of those tack strips
  • Nice work. The hot glue trick I like. Should be proud of yourself. Have confidence no matter what.

You and Stephanie did a great job! You two are an inspiration to all couples that take on home projects like this.

The stair angle jig will work with risers AND treads - way easier than stapling up or gluing up a template for every stair or riser. This is the best $40 you will ever spend and saves you hours of messing around. I bought this for one job and I'm glad I did, no regrets - time is money. You are lucky Stephanie is keeping an eye on you and supervising your work !!!! looks great.

um..... Sturdablity? New Word Monday! Love it!
  • Not to downplay your skills when the channel first started, but I think you’ve really grown as a craftsman both in knowledge and skills. Your more recent projects in particular look fantastic!
  • The stairs look amazing. The difference is like night and day. You two work so well together and have an great banter.
