Hands-On with HaptX VR Haptic Gloves!

Published 2019-07-12
We put our hands inside the HaptX virtual reality gloves that use finely tuned pneumatics to convey a striking sense of touch with VR content. HaptX's CEO Jake Rubin chats with us to talk about the challenges of convincing haptics for VR and how their technology works. It's unlike any haptics solution we've used so far!

I lost my hearing recently and have become pretty dependent on closed captions. Used to watch Tested videos a lot and only recently noticed that you guys don't seem to have CC enabled on any video. Maybe you could remedy that.

Thanks for hosting us! Had a great time visiting your studio.
  • When vr finally gets full body haptics, nerds will become the fittest people on the planet.

The Power Glove every 80s kid really wanted
  • Imagine looking back in 10 years and laughing at the size of these and looking at them as out dated and crude.
  • Haptic: We're adding pain receptors for the gloves! Me: dips hand in lava from Minecraft

There are so many valves in this. Valve should buy them.

These interviews are so good, the technical questions are on-point! It's super informative, I love it.

I've dreamed about this exact technology ever since the first dev kit of the Oculus Rift... To think we're so close already! It'll be years still before it's ready for the consumer market, but I'm really excited for further innovation in this space.

hmm. Didn't MIT create a material that unfolds when current is passed through it? If so instead of using loud clunky air to deform the lining -you could use low currents. This would also decrease size required and eliminate the need for attachments.
  • I really enjoyed watching this. Jake was very eloquent and explained their stuff in a very understandable way. Thanks guys!

This is amazing - new to VR with Index and was playing H3VR a bunch and as neat as it is with all the perfect gun models it could really benefit from even a low grade version of this system

Great video. Love the honesty. Keep it up!

It's strange to see something that some friends and I discussed back in the nineties actually being built and tested. Very cool. They should think about adding bladders to the backs of the fingers to provide resistance to opening the fingers like when you put your hands into mud or sludge. Full immersion. And think of the possibilities for hazardous environment remote operations and walking loaders like in Aliens. The future looks mechanical and I'm loving it.
  • He mentioned how do you make it fit your hand. That's of interest to me as a female gamer with quite small hands (as he briefly mentioned). This technology is fascinating to me and I can't wait to see where it goes with miniaturisation. He's a great talker. Fantastic thoughts. Thanks.
