How To Install Homelab APC Rails - NetApp DS4246 DS4243 Disk Shelf Rails (CHEAP + EASY)

Published 2022-04-06
The APC SMT Rail set is among the BEST values for creating a Disk Shelf for items that either do not have rails, or have very expensive rails. This is a heavy duty set of rails. Works great for #netapp DS4246 (ad) geni.us/netapp_4246_caddies and DS4243 (ad) geni.us/netapp-ds4243-wCaddy

There is no way to really know if you will get the mounting screws and washers with the kit above until it arrives. If you find you need the screws and washers, they are exactly these.

This is very timely for me. I bought rail kits with the EMC disk shelves that I bought from a local company, but they charged me $40 for those and they kinda suck. I was just thinking that I needed to track down some better rails even if that means having to remount all of mine. By the way, a tip: I always worry that these sort of shelf-like rails might allow the weight of the disk shelf to rest on the server/shelf below it. To try to prevent that, slide one of those PCI blanks like you showed in your video UNDER the L part of the shelf before you screw it in so you make sure there's a little gap. It's not a guarantee, but should help avoid that.

Another trick I came up with when installing my racks in my basement over the weekend: You can use these L shaped rails to help you install other items up higher a little more easily. Just flip them upside down and put them on the opposite side that they should normally be used on to make the little shelf part into a shelf that you can rest other items on temporarily. This is really handy if you can find toolless rails like these 'cuz then you don't have to screw anything in. For example, when installing a switch up in U42, it's really hard to do by yourself 'cuz you gotta hold it up there while trying to line up the ears with the rack holes and then install the screws. If you use my little trick, on the other hand, this creates a great temporary shelf that you can rest the switch on while you take your time screwing in the rack ears. Then, just remove this little temporary shelf for use elsewhere. If this doesn't make total sense, I can probably take some pictures or a video of how I do this.

My left ear enjoyed this. For real though, great tip on getting high quality used stuff rather than getting ripped off by something on amazon!
  • Nice, great video and tips on where to locate your gear on your rack. Thanks for the links

Thanks for this man. I’m going be purchasing a netapp disk shelf. And was wondering what rails to use.
  • @gordonrimac1967
I have used these rails not just with my disk shelves but all of my rack mount servers since the used servers I've purchased never seem to come with rails.
  • @LithiumSolar
Hmmm, those rails are identical the rails I used for my CSE-836 cases; however, you didn't have to leave space between yours to get the servers to fit? I wonder if the CSE-836 are just slightly out of spec height-wise or something. Now I feel like I need to pull one of them and try again.........

    yeah, those links are dead.
