UPDATE: Rockey Is No Longer Homeless in Los Angeles    • UPDATE: Rockey Is No Longer Homeless ...

When I went to visit Rockey at her tent, she started to show me how she made a gate to keep people out. I wasn't yet set up with my camera but I started recording video. Rockey shows me how she ties a rope to the gate and then sleeps with the rope so if anyone tries to get in, she'll feel it and wake up. Homeless people and especially homeless women are constantly of being attacked. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THAT!

Some of you may remember Rockey from our behind the scenes vlog on the virtual reality movie made possible through a partnership with Oculus's VR For Good, film director Rose Troche, and Invisible People. You can watch that video here:    • Virtual Reality Film on Homelessness ...   Thanks to the help from Eric Montoya and LA Family Housing, Rose was connected to Rockey and the two became friends. The VR film is about Rockey's story and Rockey also plays herself in the VR experience.

Rockey has lived homeless in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County for over three years. She has lived in this tent for about a year. Rockey says she had to make it as much of a home as possible.

Rockey had a bad turn of events that snowballed until she had no choice but to live in a tent. Rockey doesn't want to draw off the system forever. She wants to work. Rockey wants to be like normal people. Go home at the end of the day. Have a meal and watch television.

Rockey says life can change in an instant. If you don't have money to pay rent, you're going to try to survive. You build a tent. You get a trap. You grab cardboard. You do anything to keep yourself warm at night.

About Invisible People:

Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.

Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath – its founder – and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.

Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

When I was younger I was just two steps from being in this woman’s position. I had lost everything due to drugs.. my job in the fashion industry, my apartment, my family cut me off and due to my actions, I burned bridges with my friends that were allowing me to stay with them. I remember being on Bowery St in NYC sitting on my suitcase, crying... i had no idea what I was going to do. I proceeded to ask for money on the street, so many people passed me. Finally a gentleman stopped and asked why I was crying... I was honest with him and he said he would help as long as I went to rehab. He proceed to pay for the Fung Wah bus to get me to Boston and gave me some extra money to get home to NH..when I got there I went to rehab. I’ve now been off drugs for 15 years. I will never forget what that man did for me, he possibly saved my life. All it takes is that one person to listen and lend a helping hand. I love what you are doing with this channel❤️🙏🏻❤️

Says she wants to go to work, come home tired at the end of the day, and just have a meal and relax. Oh how we take life for granted! May God bless this dear lady and give her a beautiful future.

And people think homeless people are not smart; gees this woman is incredible.
  • One bad event , loose your job , get divorced, have an accident. It can happen to anyone. Esp if you have no family or friend's that can or are willing to help.

I am this Woman. I would be homeless too if it weren’t for my parents and I am 53 years old. One bad year of uncontrollable events took my bottom out. I had to leave my well paying job due to disability, I was living off of a small settlement from the accident. My husband had lost his job and really wasn’t interested in finding work again. The month my money ran out I found out he had found another woman. So he moved in with her and left me the responsibility of our high rent apt in Seattle. So my parents asked me to come live with them. 3 years later I am still waiting on Disability I paid into and have no income. Even with all the struggles I am so fortunate because I have family and not on the streets. My heart goes out to this woman.
  • I'm amazed at her tent and door. She's very resourceful and you can tell she was a hard worker. I hope she gets that house she wants.

It just makes you wonder how far it all has to go before we end the foolishness and learn to start taking care of our fellow humans.

The older I get, the more I worry that something like this is going to happen to me. Despite careful planning and saving, the last decade has really crushed my family, and Covid was the last straw. We had to sell our house earlier this year to pay off medical debt and student loans and it's just been a mess. I have a lot of sympathy for the homeless because this can really happen despite your best efforts.
  • It broke my heart to see her barely make eye contact. She is fierce, strong and smart. God bless her in her new home.
  • @MINDYWAAAA
" i wanna come home, tired at the end of the day... eat a meal and watch tv" that got me for some reason.
  • This Lady is so soft spoken inspite of what she is going through, she really deserves a chance🙏
  • I'm a grown man and this makes me so sad that it makes me cry. I'm poor but still give what I can.I found that no one else cares for you even family members, everyone is out for themselves. We are all Gods children please help just little makes a big difference .To all the homeless God loves you when no one else does.
  • @moonglow1311
As depressive as this appears, this remarkable Lady has managed to make the best of a deplorable situation❕ How she has managed to survive on the streets is beyond me. God keep her safe.....
  • @Rebeccaplease
This woman is an engineer my goodness she’s amazing
  • That door design is honestly really impressive, like I would have never come up with that. I hope she’s doing better, she seems to be well grounded and clever.
