Paranoid Side 2 [Black Sabbath Reaction] Fairies Wear Boots—Hand of Doom—Electric Funeral—Rat Salad

Published 2023-10-26
Wrapping up our reaction to Paranoid with our first time hearing the complete Side 2, containing four great Black Sabbath songs: Electric Funeral, Hand of Doom, Rat Salad, Fairies Wear Boots. And then there's a cover of Hand of Doom by Cephalic Carnage.

This is Dev's first time listening to this album. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.

All I can say, is, thank God I grew up with Sabbath, and not whoever that band is that did the cover! Stab me in the eye with a fork!… We are a product of our times, I thank God every day for being a teen in the 70s! 😁

Many say this album is top loaded but I love the second side. Certainly has Ozzy's best singing up to this point.
  • @Tarkus_
I agree with you that this is one of the best albums ever (not just for 1970)! 🤘🤘

Great reaction guys! This whole album is FIRE! I don't know how anyone could see that Hand of Doom is an endorsement of heroin use! It really doesn't paint a favourable picture...anywhere (unlike Sweet Leaf...and maybe Snowblind!) I love the second side about as much as the first...it's just continuing with Sabbath's run of perfect albums (and was to continue with Master of Reality! Which I hope you're continuing on with...) Cheers!!

"Fairies" is like one of my favorite songs to play on guitar. I've been doing it since I was a kid
  • @chebrneck
this is one of those rare "perfect" albums, where every song has become an immortal classic over time.

Watch Brown Sabbath do Fairies wear boots…it is sooooo funky and fantastic.

I just recently discovered your channel. I absolutely love Black Sabbath and have been thoroughly enjoying your channel! Much love and respect to you both!
  • What can you say about this album, there's a reason why this particular album has been named by so many metal bands as their biggest influence and the branches of other metal genres it left to come.
  • @markmoorhead1
what i love about u 2 are u play the whole side without stopping the music, u will talk but you will not stop the music, thanks a lot for that . your site is my fav. keep them coming

War Pigs, Electric Funeral and Hand of Doom are all about the horrors of war, the apocalypse, and the effect on humanity. Fairies Wear Boots based on a true encounter by the band at a pub..there where british skinheads wearing robin hood like boots along with a dwarf staring a fight with the band cause they thought they were "long haired hippies". Paranoid was a quick fill in becasue they needed 3 min to fill the album. It became a commercial hit and launched metal to the masses.

When I listen to Black Sabbath I hear warnings of evil not worship of evil

For those amused by coincidence: Led Zeppelin wrote the song Moby Dick as a drum solo but to get into it they used a simple blues progression to bookend it. Rat Salad is Black Sabbath's version of the same. Also named appropriately as it is an intricate bag of parts instead of a crafted solo meant to rise and fall between showcased rhythms.

    Best album they have done.
  • @chebrneck
"Suddenly I got a fright. Looked out the window and surprised what I saw, fairies wear boots and dancing with a dwarf, all right now!"
