The spanish empire was the largest empire from the 16th century to the 19th century. In 1898 the Spanish American war made the spanish colonial administration to cede guam, puerto rico, the philippines and cuba to the united states after spain lost the war. In 1899 the remaining 6,000 western pacific ocean islands were sold to germany after the german spanish treaty of 1899. In 1976 the western sahara withdrew from the spanish administration marking an end of the spanish empire.
