Not many people know this, but along with my passion for my cars, I also have a passion for school buses. This video features audio from an International 345 V8 motor and all the buses that motor was featured in.

1969 International Harvester Loadstar 1700 with the butterfly hood and a Carpenter bus body. Poway Unified School District bus #16, had the same 345cid V-8, with the four-speed Allison. Exact sounds brings back memories of junior high. I can remember the Tachograph mounted on the inside cowl, next to the door pull handle. Wow, nice clip and nothing today sounds anything like it.

Haven't heard that sound since I was in elementary school. First school bus was an International with a Blue Bird body.. Loved the way the transmission sounded...strong shifts...
  • everyone 45 & over remembers hearing that engine sound as a kid driving them to & from school. We had at least 6 or 7 Loadstars in the Eanes School district. Rode to school on a loadstar 1700 & road home on a 1980 GMC 504.737. Thank you for the memories.

International 392 was a popular, they were usually special order, I love the sound, very distinctive.

Wow! It's incredible how a sound can bring back so many memories! I haven't heard that engine sound since I was a kid! Our school district had a whole fleet of Loadstars with Superior bodies. Thanks for the time travel! :)

The school bus audio sounds so sentimental!

Yep. That sounds exactly like our IH busses coming to pick us up in the mid 60's. Our school had a whole fleet of them, a couple Chevy's and a Ford or two as well. Those IH busses had a sound all their own.

Thanks for posting these pictures. I owned a 46 International school bus with a Superior body back in the 70s and have always regretted selling it. I had a shot at a nice 60 International at about the same time for $1600 but passed on it and another 56 International for $1500 at the time. I paid $300 for the 46. There's hardly anything around these days.

OH yeah this is exactly what I remember riding to school. 76 IH Loadstar 1600 with the same engine and transmission (AT540 I'm guessing). After the school district dumped that bus we got a Loadstar 1700 with the AT545. It was fast as hell and sounded like it was going to explode at any minute.

International switched to diesel only power around 1985. Before they made the switch I remember the 345 V8 was the most common and the 392 was optional on S-1700 models. The S-1800 was only available with the MV gasoline V8s, the MV404 and the alleged MV446. My favorite was 392 and 404. Compared to 345 they both sound beefier especially the 404. I loved hearing those 404s. If it passed by your house it sounded as if the world was ending but in a good way.

I still remember the International Loadstar school buses. The Dallas(Texas) Independent School District was still running them as late as 1989,the year that I graduated from high school. My childhood memories of field trips in grade school are telling me that I actually rode a Loadstar on our way to a tour of the Coca-Cola Bottling plant.

The school bus @1:25, I rode in as youngster! On both sides it said "Taylor". Ms Young was my driver!

This bring back memories. My boyhood church had a 66 passenger 1963 International Wayne with the rounded rear, two 60 passenger 1967 International Waynes (one with a 345 and one with a 304, and a 60 passenger 1967 International Thomas with a six cylinder. My young adulthood church in FL had 3 72 passenger 1973 International Carpenters.

I like how the transmission whines. It brings back memories.

I could have bought one like the very first picture in the early 70s for $1600. It was in real nice shape but I wanted one even older. Eventually I found a 46, but didn't keep it forever as I should have. I'll never get it back now. The trick is to keep what you have. Not lament it years later when it's gone for good.
  • Beautiful sounding motor.

These 70's International school buses are my favorite. I like the sound clip of them being driven. That transmission whin is music to my ears. :)
