On September 30th 1998, Rockstar North, then known as DMA Design, released Body Harvest.

The Nintendo 64 exclusive was the studio's first foray into true 3D open world design, laying fundamental foundation for the studio's future work crafting the Grand Theft Auto series.

To celebrate Body Harvest's 20th anniversary, I spoke with several ex-DMA developers who worked on Body Harvest, to find out the real story behind this Grand Theft Granddaddy.

* (NOTE - Added 1/10/18 - Artist Paul Reeves did not leave DMA soon after arriving on the Body Harvest team, he worked on the title for about one and a half years.) *

  • Thanks so much for checking out Grand Theft Granddaddy! Now tell me: What's your favorite open world game and why?

Body Harvest is one of my top 10 favorite games ever made. As a kid I was hooked instantly. The feeling of being so isolated and outnumbered was one I never felt before in a video game. The music, exploration and action kept me coming back for more. I Love this game and I hope there is a reboot one day.

I rarely comment on YT stuff but this was a phenomenally made mini doc. Excellent work, especially on reaching out to people responsible for the game.

Body harvest is amazing... One of the best n64 games...

Man, this is some really, really excellent work. Managing to get these kinds of people to tell their stories is a rarity in this industry, and presenting it as slickly as you do is fucking impressive. Very well done. EDIT: that Miyamoto story in particular is wild. Typical Dundonian patter.
  • I loved this game back when I was a kid, I remember playing so much body harvest. It was pretty ambitious for its time and I still look back on it very fondly. ,
  • I seriously hate it when people say something is "outdated" or hasn't aged well cause it's not modern or something. Body Harvest is great.

One of the things Nintendo asked DMA to implement was walking speed indoors, which is still present in GTA 5. They said they learned a lot from them. One of my biggest gaming accomplishments is finally completing Body Harvest with zero casaulties and zero harvests. Another is getting all 100 stars in their brilliant action horror Manhunt.

Just bought this game in 2022. So much nostalgia and still a lot of fun.
  • I fucking loved this game as a kid, it's grossly underrated, and well overdue for a reboot, though I've seen theres a remake in the works
  • @Jandeganjaman
One of that few games i never finished as a kid. It was a masterpiece
  • @moviemaker310
That was fantastic. Didn't expect the documentary to be high quality but sure it was. Loved it.
  • @konf1ka
Fuck yes. Body harvest was a beast of a game. It was buggy as fuck, and hard to play, but it was so ahead of its time. A remake with the proper marketing budget and updated design would sell like hot cakes.

I'm glad DMA never gave up and continued until they made the masterpiece that is Gta 3. Body Harvest really looked like an ambitious project and it's quite sad that it was a commercial failure, I would have played the hell out of it if I got my hands on it at that time. Great Documentary Game Brain, I look forward to your future work.
  • I loved this game growing up. It really needs to be remastered, and or brought back to life with a new game.
  • @9ALiTY
Rockstar get on a Reboot GTA = Modern Red Dead = Past Body Harvest = Future
  • @hardcorgamer007
