I am Moana!!!!! Well, technically not me, but she made me feel like I could sing it at the top of my lungs. What a great film with an extraordinary ending. Here's everything right with Moana!

When Lin-Manuel Miranda was writing the song “You’re Welcome”, he wrote it with The Rock in mind because he knew that Dwayne Johnson was the only person who could sing such an egotistical song and make it believable

I found a win, those moments when moana pressed her forehead against te fiti is actually how ancient Polynesians kissed because they believed the mouth was only for talking

10:13 You appear to have missed the point. Before Moana, each chief put a FLAT rock to make the island taller. They put flat rocks so their descendants will have a flat surface to put their own rocks, to further solidify their insistence on staying on the island. By placing a non-flat object on top, she still made the island taller, BUT she also forces the future generations to go elsewhere to put their rocks on top of, because they won't be able to place anything on top of the shell. She broke the cycle not by "being unique", but by physically preventing its perpetuation.

I know this is more than two years old so someone has probably already mentioned this but a quick scan of the comments revealed nothing similar so: The ocean didn't pick Moana JUST because she saved the turtle, it was how she did it. Moana could have easily picked up the turtle and carried it to the water, but she didn't. She kept it safe as best she could while the turtle made the journey on its own, just like the ocean did for Moana. It chose her because it believed she understood that people need to do things for themselves, even if they have someone there to watch over them.

"Have you defeated a lava monster?" "No..have you?" Him: Lava burnt. Me: Elsa, were gonna need you to come in-

From a character model perspective, I love the realism in Moana’s body specifically. Her arms especially. She has pretty muscular arms from what would have been a fair amount of physical work over her 16 years of life, and you can literally SEE the muscles tensing and relaxing realistically below her skin. Amazing.

Fun Fact: Those freaky six-eyed bat things are pulled straight out of Polynesian mythology.

One of my favorite things about Moana is how, after having given up her quest and then choosing to take it on for herself - rather than having it given to her - she dives in and picks up the Heart herself. She does not ask the Ocean to bring it back to her.

You completely forgot one of Maui’s lines are true “until I cut of his leg” the crabs actually missing a leg.

Additional win, Heihei is the māori word for chicken.
  • @michaelfino27
can we give you a win for actually learning to pronounce Auli'i's name
  • @aienma6660
Nothing on the scene where he throws her off the boat, ocean brings her back, he throws the heart, ocean hits him in the head with it. Maui: Ok, I'm out
  • @MattDel907
Lin-Manuel said he only knew what kind of vocal range The Rock had by watching him sing in the ring for like the 30 seconds that he did sing. LMM is amazing.

What I love about Moana is how even though she's not the first Disney princess to want to explore outside her home and experience adventure, she wanted to do that AND save her people. she was genuinely ready and willing to become the chief of her tribe and lead them to a whole new world of possibility and I think that's just amazing
  • a missed win for the fact that everything maui mentions doing in “you’re welcome” is actually pulled from his real life mythology!
  • @Shimarenda
She wasn't able to get past the reef the first time because she wasn't sailing an ocean-worthy canoe; all her people's available canoes were for inside the reef. Not only wasn't it that she needed to get the additional information narratively, she also needed an ocean canoe.
  • Another thing I like about Maui's character that is exemplified in "Your Welcome". Maui did SO MANY heroic things and gave humanity so many gifts. But what did everyone know him for? For stealing the heart of Te Fiti. Brilliantly showcasing that it does not matter how many good deeds you will do, you will always be known for your mistakes.
